MAKE A WISH
Next Thursday is our fund raising day for the ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation. This foundation has granted over 4,700 very special wishes in the UK since 1986 and it exists in 30 countries around the world. The purpose of ‘Make A Wish’ is to grant magical wishes to children and young people facing life-threatening illnesses. The Newbridge School Council chose this as our fund raiser for this term after gathering the views of children and families across the school. We are very proud to have the chance to help bring a wish to life for Mitchell who is 16 years old, lives in Bristol and suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
In Monday’s whole school assembly, Jennie Osborne, from Make A Wish, is going to tell us about the organisation and about Mitchell whose wish is to go to Disney World in Florida. Our aim is to raise £1000 next Thursday so that we can help make his wish come true. We think we can do it. If everyone brings in a £2 contribution for the privilege of wearing mufti and for participating in / watching our very own House Talent Festival (‘Words, Music & Movement’) then we can reach our target. In addition, it is the Year 1 & 6 cake sale after school on that day in the Lower School hall and all the proceeds are going towards Mitchell’s cause. If anyone would like to bring in more than a £2 contribution then we have even more chance of helping Mitchell reach his dream. As regards the mufti, we are waiting to hear about Mitchell’s favourite colour so it would be fantastic if everyone had that colour for at least part of their clothing. We will let you know the colour at the beginning of next week. Thank you for your support for Mitchell – let’s reach that £1000 mark!

CELEBRATING WRITING
I can write a cliff hanger:
As I walked from the spooky tunnel I saw some light and then I saw a stranger in the distance. He started walking and then he started jogging. My heart was beating fast. Suddenly he ran at me. I couldn’t feel my legs. I was so scared I started running for my life. I thought if I kept running he would get out of breath but he didn’t. He was getting closer and closer. I was getting out of breath and my legs were aching. I tripped on a stone and fell to the ground.

HEAD’S VIEW
One of our core principles as a school is to do everything in our powers to help our children discover and develop their interests and talents. Another of those principles is to have our school at the centre of the local community. We see examples of these principles every day but I would just like to highlight a few this past week and say ‘WELL DONE!’ to the following:
- All our children who had their excellent art work displayed at the community art exhibition at St John’s Church last weekend. Congratulations to them and to our parents who exhibited, not forgetting our vicar and governor, Clive Garrett, whose photographs on display were very impressive.
- The gymnastics team who won the BANES competition on Wednesday amidst very strong competition.
- The hockey squad who may not have won their competition but gave up their Sunday morning to play with the spirit and attitude that we respect so much at Newbridge.
- The whole school community who rallied round at short notice and raised over £350 for Comic Relief last Friday.
- All our parents, Mrs O’Gara and Mr Baigent for toiling in this fantastic weather to run the Bath Half Marathon, cheered on by, it seems, the rest of Newbridge!
- Over 100 who came along to last Friday’s Quiz Night, raised a stack of money for the school, and at the same time displayed outstanding intelligence and good humour to match!
Of course, we only have these opportunities because of the commitment of those adults who make these events happen in one way or another. Our gratitude goes to all of them.
Talking about community spirit, the next Groundforce Day takes place next Saturday 28th March. We have much to do so any help from our families is most appreciated. Just come along at any time between 9.00am and 1.00pm, with gardening implements to hand, and help us take the next step in developing our external environment. If you have any queries please contact Martin Powell on Martin.Powell101@googlemail.com or phone 01225 424765.

HEADLICE!
This is a constant problem in schools up and down the country and particularly in our school at the moment. A number of upset and frustrated parents have contacted us requesting help and support in advising all parents to check and treat their children’s hair for headlice. It is the responsibility of every parent to check their child’s hair regularly and treat accordingly, otherwise the problem persists and it becomes very frustrating for those who do check regularly and treat when needed. As a school, we do all we can to bring it to the attention of parents / carers in a particular class when we are made aware of headlice.

HOCKEY
On Sunday 15th March two Newbridge Hockey teams trekked through Bath, avoiding the half-marathon, to play their last league matches at the University of Bath. The sun was shining and everyone was in good spirits. Both teams played St Stephens’ B and All Hallows, from Frome. Both teams played extremely well and persevered against two experienced schools. Jack deserves a special mention as he played goal keeper for all four matches and had a great day. Well done Jack, the goals scored against us would have been higher if you hadn’t played so well. Thank you to all the children who played, giving Mrs Kennaugh, Mrs Bartlett and the parents real entertainment. Thank you to Mrs Kennaugh for coaching the teams and organising their tactical play.
Date for your diary: Hockey tournament on 1st April at the University of Bath from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. Letter to follow.
FOOTBALL REPORT
On Friday 13th March Newbridge School football team played St Mary’s. The team got off to a great start. The ball bounced right in front of Jacob and he smashed it and it rattled the crossbar and went in. The second goal came from Mark’s ball in to Alex’s feet and Alex placed it into the corner. The third goal came from Mark. At half-time it was 5-0. In the second half we were all over them, with goals from Joe D and two each from Jacob and Alex. Unfortunately they scored by hitting the ball over Tom. The final score was 10-1 to Newbridge.
We would like to thank Mr Cumpson for organising the game and to everyone who supported us.

Following another great quiz night last Friday, I am thrilled to announce that a record-breaking £992 was raised! DEPUTY HEAD’S VIEW
As I am sure you are aware, we always wish to offer our children the very best that they deserve. In this way, all our staff have extremely high expectations of their own performance and continually seek to build on and improve this. As a school we are committed to professional development for all staff, but often it is the case that, of their own accord, teachers and support staff attend training and commit to their own chosen professional courses. With regards to our Teaching Assistants, a fair number have chosen to train as and have been awarded Higher Level Teaching Assistant status (HLTAs). Most recently, Mrs Seek who works in the upper school has been accredited with this standard – well done! We are truly fortunate with the high level of expertise, dedication and care offered by all support staff and I know that without this a teacher’s day would be an almost impossible task.
This week I would like to welcome Isobel who has joined 5C, having arrived here very recently from 3 years in Shanghai and a year in India. I have no doubt we will all be intrigued to hear of her differing experiences.
Through the historical running of the 2 previous schools we had not, until this point, moved to serving our parents and friends with tea and coffee following Lower School class assemblies. However, Lower School assemblies will now commence at 2:40pm to allow for this to happen. Members of the NPSA have very kindly offered to lay this on, though if any attending visitor is able to help, that would be much appreciated. I do need to inform you though, that as a staff member will not be present, parents must be responsible for pre-school children, particularly in light of hot drinks, thank you.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – FEBRUARY
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

TESCO VOUCHERS FOR SCHOOLS
We are collecting Tesco vouchers for schools. They are in stores now and will be there until Sunday 7th June. We need as many as possible as we are collecting for new digital cameras and resources for the school grounds. We would especially like a bird box with a webcam which we hope to link up to the school website! We can also earn extra vouchers by recycling used inkjet cartridges and old mobile phones. The collection box for the vouchers is in the main Reception.
COMMUNITY ART EXHIBITION AT ST JOHN’S CHURCH
Once again it is time for the annual exhibition of community art work at St John’s Church, Lower Weston. A number of pieces of art work by Newbridge children have been selected to go on display and can be seen at the opening ceremony on Thursday 12th March 2009 from 7.30pm and then from 10.00am – 8.00pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Parents of children whose work has been selected will be notified.
Wondering what to do with old logo Newbridge sweatshirts???
Some of you might have seen mentioned in a recent newsletter The Ragbag Project. This is a project that sends any unwanted school sweatshirts to benefit orphans and street children in South Africa. This would be a great way to put any old logo Newbridge sweatshirts to use!! A collection box will be available in the Upper School entrance - so dig out any old logo school sweatshirts and give them a new lease of life! Any questions - please ask Hala Langan, Meg's mum 2B
