NEWSLETTER Issue: 1.06

HEAD'S VIEW
I would like to thank the Newbridge community for helping to make our Harvest assembly a very special one. The display of tins and packets of food was quite spectacular and a testimony to the generosity of our families. I know the Genesis Trust are delighted as many of the homeless they support will benefit. Thank you.

We welcome a new boy, Harry, who started in 2C this week. He tells me that everyone has been very kind to him and made him feel welcome. He has yet to go through the welcome in whole school assembly!

Next week is a themed week. We are taking the opportunity to focus on our class topics and do some creative work around them. We are also using the topic week to introduce the skills and attitudes of learning; an emphasis which is part of our development plan. Therefore next week’s timetable and homework will not be the same as usual.

Every child in Years 1 to 6 now has a 'My Learning' folder and this contains the skills and attitudes of learning. We have asked the children to take them home this weekend so our parents and carers can see exactly what we are aiming for. There will be other times in the year when they will be brought home for families to contribute to. Please can parents ensure that the folders are returned on Monday because they will be needed during the course of next week.

THE PRIMARY MATHS CHALLENGE
Calling all budding mathematicians in Years 5 and 6.

Do you like a challenge?
Do you like to push yourself to the limit?
Do you want to take part in a national activity involving more than 100,000 children?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then the Primary Maths Challenge is just for you.

Taking part in November 2008, you will face a series of brain-bending multiple choice puzzles to be completed in 45 minutes. This may lead to you competing against other schools in the Maths Challenge Finals during February 2009.

Check out the website
www.m-a.org.uk and follow the links to Primary Maths Challenge, try out some of the puzzles and see what other children had to say.

If you would like to take part please let Mrs Phillips know (in writing) by 24th October 2008.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – SEPTEMBER
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!

The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

BATH SCHOOLS HIGH 5 NETBALL TOURNAMENT
On Thursday 9th October two teams of Newbridge Netball players went to a High 5 netball tournament at Oldfield Secondary School. Newbridge B team's first game was against Bathwick. With a few excellent goals Newbridge won 2-4. In the next game Newbridge B beat St Michael's 1-3. But then we were against Oldfield Park and we drew 2-2. The next match was against Newbridge A team. Newbridge B just won, 1-0. Our last game was against St Stephen's and we won again, 1-0. The final results were; St Michael's in 6th, Oldfield Park 5th, Newbridge A 4th, St Stephen's 3rd, Bathwick 2nd and Newbridge B came 1st! By Thea
On Thursday 9th October Newbridge Netball Team A went to the Oldfield Netball Tournament. There were six other schools there; St Michael's, Oldfield Park, Newbridge A, St Stephen's, Bathwick and Newbridge B. Our first game was against St Stephen's and we drew with them 2-2. Our second game was against Oldfield Park and we drew with them as well, 2-2. In our third game we played St Michael's and we unfortunately lost 2-0, despite getting dramatically close to some great nets. Our fourth game was against Newbridge B. There were no losers in this game! But Ava from Team B scored a fab hoop, which left the score 1-0 to them. Overall Newbridge Team A came fourth after some great matches. We had a smashing time. Thanks to Mrs Bartlett for organising it and thank you to the supporters that came along. By Isabella

Well done to all the Year 6 children who participated in the BANES Netball Festival last week. Both teams played extremely well, working together, encouraging each other and generally enjoying themselves.

A big congratulations to Newbridge B who won the tournament and are through to the final in January next year. How pleased was Mrs Bartlett? Thank you to all those parents who supported us and helped to walk the children to Oldfield. – Mrs Bartlett

('A huge 'well done!' to all our netballers and to 'Coach Bartlett'! It is great to see netball continuing to thrive at Newbridge.' Mr Croker.)

NPSA NEWS
Christmas Fair - Thursday 4th December - 5.00pm – 7.00pm
For those of you who are new to the school, this is an event that should not be missed! The school is transformed into a winter wonderland for the children - complete with Santa's Grotto, the ever popular chocolate tombola, splat the rat and plenty of other games and stalls. It starts at 5.00pm and ends at 7.00pm but there is no need to worry about tea time, as hot meals are available as well as tea and coffee. As you can imagine, we need a whole army of helpers either on the day or before to help with the organisation, so what we will be doing is allocating stalls to each class and setting the class reps on you! More seriously, any volunteers would be greatly appreciated and nearer the time we will send out forms enabling you to volunteer for specific time slots throughout the day. Any of you who would like to get involved with the actual organisation, just put your details in the NPSA tray! So, put the date in your diaries and get ready to have some fun!

Update on class reps
The good news is that we now have a class rep for 6A. A big thank you to Lucy Dunford! The bad news is that no-one has come forward from 6CS. So please volunteer quickly before we get your children to nominate you! The other news on the class rep front is that Carla Musgrave has volunteered to help Anette Smidt with 1H. Jo Stevenson - class rep for 6JS - would also like some help with her duties. She works full time and would love to share the role with another parent who actually drops off and picks up. So, parents from 6JS and 6CS, please put your details in the NPSA tray.

Years 1 and 5 Cake Sale - Thursday 23rd October - 3.15pm
Just a reminder to all parents and carers of children in Years 1 and 5 - we need your cakes! Please bring them on Thursday morning to the kitchen in the Blue Room. We also need some volunteers to sell them, so if you could help either for 30 minutes before the end of school, during the cake sale itself for 30 minutes or afterwards to clear up, then let your class rep know. The sale itself will take place in the Blue Room and is open to everyone. Please come and support your school!

Table Top Sale - Saturday 15th November - 10.30am -12.30pm
As mentioned in last week's newsletter, the NPSA is holding a Table Top Sale. It will be held in the main hall and will be open to the public between 10.30am and 12.30pm .Set up will start at 9.30am and the school will be cleared by 1.00pm. If you would like to book a table and sell off some of your no longer needed possessions, the fee is £10. If you want to come and pick up some bargains, the entrance fee is £1. Children are free. We also need volunteers to sell refreshments, take money on the door and bake cakes. To book a table or volunteer your services, please fill in the slip below and return it to school. Thank you.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE NEWSLETTER

WELCOME to the first edition of our Newbridge Learning Resource Centre (LRC) newsletter. This edition provides exciting news of future plans for our brilliant Library and details of when you can start borrowing books! Future editions will be issued periodically to give you details of forthcoming activities and events.

FIRSTLY, A BIG THANK YOU!
Our school library would simply not have been possible without a great deal of hard work by several school parents who generously gave a lot of their own time to plan the library and catalogue and shelve hundreds and hundreds of books. We would therefore like so say a BIG THANK YOU to Sarah Le Butt, Catherine Marlowe, Judy Groves and Kim Noad for all their efforts.
John Croker, Headteacher and Tony Day, LRC Manager.

We’re open for borrowing from 5 November!
Our Library will officially "open for business" on Wednesday, 5 November, when children from Years 3 and 4 will start to be able to borrow books to take home to read. To spread the load, each Year Group will have its own "borrowing and return day" (please see below). Children will also be able to access the library at other times throughout the week. Parents and carers are also very welcome to come into the library after school (between 3.30pm and 4.45pm) on the relevant day(s), to see what it has to offer and to help the choosing process!

Borrowing and return days:
Mondays: Elm, Willow, Years 1 and 2
Wednesdays: Years 3 and 4
Friday: Years 5 and 6

CROCODILE ON THE LOOSE!
Our library has its own resident crocodile – pictured above with two of his friends. He is called "Crocky-Lake", a name chosen by our reception classes. There's no need to worry though, he's very friendly and likes listening to stories. It sometimes looks as though he's more in danger from the children than the other way round!

Love our LRC…to the CORE
We don't want our LRC to be a stuffy place, where you get told off for talking! However, so that we properly look after our books and other resources (which have cost a lot of money!), it is important that everyone behaves appropriately in the LRC and always takes really good care of the books they borrow. To help us all to do this, you just need to remember "CORE":

Care - for the books, handle them properly and gently
Order - make sure all books are put back in the right order and right place
Respect - behave considerately and politely to everyone else in the LRC
Enjoy - the books and your learning!

VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!
Our Library is what it is largely thanks to those volunteers who have given so generously of their time and energy. If any parents/carers are interested in volunteering to assist with future operation of the library, please contact Tony Day, Newbridge Primary School Learning Resource Centre manager,
tony_day@newbridge.bathnes.sch.uk, 01225-421675 Extension 220.

PUPIL INVOLVEMENT IN THE LRC
This will be very important to help further stimulate children's interest in books, research and learning. A key way in which children can get involved is through volunteering to become Pupil Librarians. Initially, we plan to enable Year 6 to play this very responsible and interesting role and we may later invite Year 5 children to take part.

UNWANTED AUDIO BOOKS, DVDs or VIDEOS?
If anyone has any audio books, DVDs or videos that they no longer want or need, they would be gratefully received. We will, though, only be able to accept items that are classified as suitable for Primary School children.

INFORMATION EVENING FOR PARENTS
Last Thursday, a good number of our parents and carers came along to hear about recent developments at Newbridge. As various members of our Senior Management Team spoke, it quickly became very apparent to all attending how far the primary school has come in a short period of time. The development of the buildings is the visible sign of this change but so much more, like the proverbial iceberg, has happened beneath the surface. We cannot provide the detail here but these are just some of the developments:
Learning
- Introduction of assessment system which involves the children more in knowing where they are and what they need to work on, and a tracking system which enables us to evaluate and support the progress of each child through the school.
- Introduction of programme called 'My Learning' to develop the skills and attitudes of learning. Each child from Year 1 to 6 will have their own 'My Learning' folder and this will be brought home shortly and at times during the year. The full explanation will be in the folder but, in the meantime, an overview of the skills and attitudes we are developing is attached to this newsletter. There is an additional attachment for Foundation Stage parents whose children will not have a folder but will be fully involved in the programme.
- Introduction of Reading Recovery teacher and programme in Year 1 as well as a whole school provision map for supporting special needs with increased teaching assistant hours.
- The introduction of 'My Learning Journey' books in Foundation Stage as a record of a child’s many and varied achievements.
- Introduction of a phonics programme ('Letters and Sounds') and a cursive handwriting programme in the early years.
- Introduction of a number skills system, 'Reach for the Sun', throughout the school to help children become fluent in the basic number skills. More details about this out shortly.
- Substantial investment in books at all levels and the opening up of the library for school community use.
Communication
- Introduction of 'Getting to Know You' sessions for parents at the beginning of the school year.
- Curriculum Overviews issued at the beginning of each term to provide information to parents on what their children will be covering that term.
- The introduction of Literacy Link books to take us a step on from the existing Reading Records.
- The introduction of one to one discussions between teacher and pupil to help us in our core principle of 'knowing and valuing each child'.
Environment
- The major building work completed for the present but continuing work and refurbishment to go on throughout the school to ensure the best possible environment for our children.
- The next step is to develop and make best use of the external environment. We are currently working with the Avon Wildlife Trust and one of our parents, Mr Powell, to take significant steps over the next twelve months to achieve this aim. More details out shortly.

BITS AND PIECES
· Please note that there will be a Year 1 and 2 disco at the end of the year on Monday 20th July. This was omitted from the original calendar.
· The new House Points board is now up in the Upper School Hall, complete with Cheeky (ask your children!), thanks to Mr Ricketts and Mr Baigent whose carpentry skills and artistic flair combined quite beautifully!
· Please ensure the pedestrian gate is closed behind you when accessing during the day. Thank you.
· Please can you ensure that no bikes or scooters are ridden on the school site: outside the gates fine, inside the gates not.

BOOK FAIR
On Wednesday 15th October we will be having a one day book fair. This will take place in the Upper School Foyer. All children will have the opportunity to browse the fair during the day. Children in Years 3 to 6 can buy books during the school day. They should bring their money in a named purse or envelope and give this to their class teacher at the start of the day. Children in the Foundation Stage and Years 1 and 2 can buy books after school accompanied by their parents/carers.

SUPPORTING CHARITIES
Our school is committed to supporting and raising funds for local, national and international charities. This term, up to Christmas, we are supporting the homeless in Bath, through the Genesis Trust, by donating all the produce we collect for today's Harvest Assembly.

Next Friday is one of our regular highlights of the year – yes, it is Ted's Big Day Out! The children can come to school in mufti, bring a teddy with them and a contribution of £1. If you would like to give more that would be great, because all the proceeds are going towards supporting our local hospital, the RUH, and, in particular, the building of the new NICU unit for premature babies. As well as doing all we can to support the RUH, our aim next Friday will be to hold the largest Teddies' singalong in Bath, if not the world, when we hold our special afternoon singing assembly.
Looking towards supporting national and international charities, this is where we need your help. We are already committed to the Link Romania shoebox appeal (details out shortly). However, we have also given the task to our school councillors to talk with their classes, staff and parents, agree on a national and international charity they would like to support and bring their proposals to the next school council meeting on Monday 10th November. The council will then decide on one national and one international charity we will support in the spring and summer terms.

Congratulations to all those who have started in all the music clubs.

NPSA UPCOMING EVENTS
Cake Sale - Thursday 23rd October
For those of you new to the school, cake sales are held regularly throughout the year. The aim is to make money for the NPSA which is then spent on a variety of projects such as contributing to school trips, funding visiting theatre groups, providing games and toys for wet playtimes… Each sale is run by two year groups and the parents and carers in that year group are asked to donate cakes. These are then sold at the end of school day.
Our first cake sale this year will be run by Year 1 and Year 5 so, if your children are in those years, please get us off to a good start and bake some cakes (or failing that buy some!). We also need volunteers to help sell all the goodies, so if you can donate half an hour of your time please contact your class reps and let them know.
So, put this in your diaries and come along and buy some cakes and let’s get our fundraising off to a great start!
Coffee and Cake Morning - Thursday 13th November
This will be our first ever NPSA Coffee Morning and we need you to make it a success! The idea behind it is to build up a feeling of community at the school and enable people to make new friends and learn more about the NPSA. We also thought it would be a good way for parents new to the school to get to know a few more people.
There will be a series of coffee mornings throughout the year and we have tried to vary the day of the week in order to reach as many people as possible.
Please feel free to bring your toddlers and we will provide a box of toys to keep them entertained. It will take place in the Blue room at 9.00 – 10.00 am and tea or coffee will cost 50 pence and cake will also cost 50 pence. It should be fun! So come along and join us.
Table Top Sale - Saturday 15th November
Is your house bursting at the seams? Are you unable to close your closets? If so, book a table at the table top sale, trade in your clutter for cash and help your school in the process! So start collecting your things together and look out for further information on how to book a table in next week’s newsletter. By the way, this sale is not limited to children’s clothes and toys, you can sell off your books, CD’s, frocks and crockery - this is an inside car boot sale!

A BIG 'THANK YOU' TO OUR CHILDREN
We would like to thank our children for filling out the children's questionnaire at the end of last term. It was really useful and helped us with our plans to make the school even better in the future. We would like to thank five children in particular [Harrison (6CS), Hannah (6JS), Isaac (6A), Katie (5PB) and Aisling (5C)] who spent hours putting the questionnaire together and then hours more sorting out all the answers. They found that most of the children really enjoy school and their learning, that the staff and children are caring and kind, and that they feel safe. Things to work on include lunchtimes and playtimes and feelings were mixed about homework! Last year's Willow class would like more dancing and a swimming pool while Elm class would settle for a chocolate factory. Now, that would be a first!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We would like to widen the range of activities for our children when it is a wet playtime or lunchtime. If you have any board games (no electronic games please), comics or such like which are in good condition and you are happy to donate to the school, we would be most grateful. These would also be great for our breakfast club children too. Please send in with your child to the class teacher. Thank you!

FAMILY USE OF LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE – BOOKS AND COMPUTERS GALORE!
The LRC has now opened for family use at the end of school on Mondays and Fridays. There has not been the rush we thought there would be, so we are now opening use of the LRC to the whole school on these two days. All we ask is that you sign in at the office so that we are not swamped on any one particular day! Mr Day is on hand both days in the LRC to offer his help.

NPSA NEWS
Last Thursday, Newbridge Primary School Association had its Annual General Meeting. This was a Cheese and Wine Evening and we would like to thank all of you who came along and helped make it such a fun evening! Attendance was up on last year, which is great. Although, I do wonder how much that had to do with the free wine...

For those of you who were unable to come, this is what went on. Both our outgoing Chair, Jackie Ainsworth, and Mr Croker thanked all of those who helped out in any way, big or small, at the many events organised by the NPSA last year. These included the phenomenally successful Auction of Promises, the Christmas Fair, Quiz night, the Fashion Show and the many cake sales. The outgoing Treasurer, Stephanie Massie, then told us how the money raised at these events was spent on a variety of projects which all benefit our children's education. These include a sound and lighting system for the main hall, library books and equipment, staging and musical instruments. These are all things for the whole school to enjoy and we would like to thank anyone who gave either their time or their money to make a difference to the school. We can now also confirm the list of officers and class reps for 08/09. An enormous thank you goes to the outgoing officers from last year, Sarah Webb, Jackie Ainsworth and Stephanie Massie, although I am happy to announce that both Jackie and Stephanie remain with us, albeit in different roles.
Chair: Stephanie Massie
Vice-chair: Jackie Ainsworth

I am sure you have noticed that two of the year six classes are without representation, so if your child is in one of these classes, please volunteer. You can share the job with another person if you like. If you are interested in this role and would like to know what it involves, please drop a note with your name and contact number in the NPSA tray at the main reception. Your school needs you! We also thought it might be useful if you knew what your class reps look like - so you know who to grab or who to avoid! So, to that end we are asking all class reps to supply photos of themselves and leave them in the NPSA tray in reception by next Friday.

Finally, I would like to remind you that, as parents, you are all members of the NPSA and as such are welcome at all committee meetings. So come and join us at the next meeting. This is to be held in the Blue Room at 7.30pm on Monday 6th October. Main items on the agenda will be planning the future fundraising events for the whole year and putting together a team to organise the Christmas Fair. So, if you have any good ideas for fundraising events, or if you would just like an insight into how the NPSA works, then come along on Monday. We look forward to seeing you there!
