HEAD’S VIEW
I write these words the night before the end of term and our Year 6 leavers are arriving for their farewell tea and disco. They are a fabulous group of girls and boys who all deserve a royal send off. Those of us lucky enough to watch the ‘Cinderella Rockerfella’ performances last week were bowled over, not only by their talent and quality of performance, but by the sheer joy and sense of togetherness that filled the hall. Those performances epitomised this year group and what they have brought to the school over the years. Without doubt they have made our school a better place. Tomorrow will be an emotional day for all of us but we know they are ready for the next chapter in their lives. We also know that they will light up their secondary schools and their lives beyond. We wish them all the very best of luck. Those same wishes go to Rachel (3H) and to Jasmin (2C) and their families. Both girls leave to join schools nearer to their homes – I hope both schools appreciate how lucky they are.

Tomorrow is also a sad day for us as we say ‘farewell’ to Mrs Phillips, Mrs Horobin and Mrs Sheldrake. Mrs Phillips has been at Newbridge for five years and taught in both the lower and upper school during that time. She has all the qualities you would look for in a teacher and I have never known her to have anything but the best interests of the children at heart. Her commitment has been huge and she has played a significant part in our development as a primary school. I know I speak for every member of staff when I say that she will be missed as a valued and inspirational colleague, and as a good friend. What will we do without your biscuits too, Mrs Phillips?! Our best wishes go with you to Box Primary School and new challenges ahead. Mrs Horobin leaves after a year teaching French for one day a week to our older children. Not only have the children really enjoyed learning French with her but our staff have picked up loads of good ideas for the future. We wish her all the very best for the future. Merci beaucoup, Madame Horobin! Mrs Sheldrake has been a teaching assistant at Newbridge since 2002 but that only tells a very small part of the story. We have all greatly valued her care for the children, her professionalism and skill over the years and we wish her all the very best in the future.

This has been a very eventful year! There have been so many highlights that I could not even begin to list them. They range from that moment when the light goes on in a child’s eye, the small act of kindness that makes a difference, the effort that is needed to produce one’s best day in and day out, personal goals reached, team achievements, moments of brilliance, pride in who we are and of each other, laughter – lots of that. I speak not only of our children here but all the staff and everyone connected to the school. I cannot thank you all enough or praise your efforts too highly.

I must also mention the fantastic voluntary support we receive – I find it hard to believe that there is a school which is better supported. Of course, with our Year 6 leaving, we are also saying ‘farewell’ to many of our parents and families who have themselves become very much part of the school and given so much support over the years. It is hugely appreciated.

Now, it is time for a rest and a time to draw breath. I would like to finish this final ‘Head’s View’ of the year with comments from two children. The first came from a girl in Year 2 who wrote in her report: ‘My favourite topic is pirates because there’s lots of good stuff to do. You can be rude and you don’t have to brush your teeth.’ The second came from a girl in Year 5 who when asked to speed up with her work replied ‘Mr Cumpson, you can’t hurry perfection!’

I hope you all have a fantastic holiday.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – JULY
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!

The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

MUSIC
We have had another fantastic busy year of music from the choir singing in the Chronicle Christmas Concert; the school Christmas CD; to the joint schools’ oratorio at the Pavilion to name only a few.

We would like to thank Mr Cumpson for arranging it and our parents for taking us.

CHESS ROUND UP
This has been another excellent year of chess. The club has had numbers of between 40 to 50 players attending and the standard of play has been consistently high. We had a lot of fun too! We did not qualify this year for the semi finals of the national schools competition but there were many individual successes. Congratulations to Will and Joda on being selected to play for the county – that is a first at Newbridge. We also had a group of players qualify from the school competition for the Megafinals at Millfield. They were Jack, Max, Sam, Cameron, Joda, Will, Tom, Alice, Jake and Edward. Well done to Sam, Will, Joda and Jake on going through to the Gigafinals in the summer holidays and good luck! We would also like to thank Mr Knight (Oli and Emily’s Dad) for helping to run the club this year and thank you to all our Year 6 players who have been fantastic members of the club. Keep playing and see you at the club in September!
Mr Croker and the chess club.

HEAD’S VIEW
This is the briefest Head’s View ever – the epic comes next week! I would like to welcome two new children who joined our school this week: Lorna (2B) and Joshua (1R). Lorna has survived the ultimate challenge: the ‘whole school welcome’ while Joshua’s turn will come! We welcome them both, and their families, to our school. Highlights are arriving thick and fast at the moment and I just want to say to all the children, staff, parents and volunteers, ‘just keep going – you are all fabulous’! Much more next week.

YEAR 6 LEAVERS’ TEA AND DISCO
Our Year 6 are cordially invited to the tea which commences at 5.00pm and the disco which commences at 6.00pm. You then have the dance floor exclusively to yourselves for half an hour before you are joined by the ladies and gentlemen from Year 5. Entrance for our leavers is, of course, free.

AN OPEN INVITATION TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS
If you have volunteered to help our children and school in any way this year, you are warmly invited to the Musicians Assembly at 2pm next Wednesday 22nd July in the Upper School hall. Cream teas will be served in the Blue Room afterwards. This is our own small way of saying ‘Thank you’. RSVP The School Office

CALLING VOLUNTEERS FOR THE FUTURE!
Thank you to all our current and prospective volunteers who came to our two coffee mornings held last week during which Mr Day, as Community Links Coordinator, and I gave a talk about our plans to develop the volunteer network at Newbridge. We are aware that a number of interested parents were unable to attend the meetings. There will be further information about this in September but in the meantime, if you are interested in volunteering in any capacity next year, would you please complete and return the attached Information Sheet by the end of this term. This will enable us to start setting up the network. Please be assured that completing and returning this does not obligate you in any way! We will also be setting up a Better Reading Partners programme next year which involves a volunteer working one to one with a child to support their reading. This would be for a ten week block, for one hour on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Two day training is provided. If you are interested in possibly taking part in this excellent programme please indicate on the form. Thank you. Mr Croker

CELEBRATING WRITING - Meg – 2B
Newbridge walk
First we went to school and I sat on yellow table. Then we got into partners and my partner was Sophie. We put our bags on and looked at the quiz tasks. Eventually we went to the school gate and started the quiz. The first question was ‘How many lampposts are there in Charmouth Road?’ Our walk started at the end of Charmouth Road and my grown-up was Mrs Clark. On the first part of the walk we were at the front! We went to Rosslyn Road and spotted lots of bugs and cats. Our groups found the caterpillar, it had 3 balls on the top and an orange face (the balls were red). Soon we got to a field and one of the groups saw a deer! When we sat down we kept going on ants nests! We drew the view through our binoculars and we carried on after a while over millions of stiles. After that we went to Johan’s for lunch. We sat on a picnic rug. The garden was huge and there were at least 11 groups there! We could have a drink of water and stop off to go to the loo. Later on we went across the canal and we (some people) were lucky enough to watch the canal boat go through the locks!

ART WEEK – Fun had by all!
With the end of term fast approaching, we wanted to share with you a quick round up of our fantastic events during Art week. The children were buzzing with excitement all week as there were so many things going on, which included not only our Olympic Artist who worked with a group of Upper School children on a themed mural, but also:
- exciting sessions run by locally based artists
- art sessions based on a range of famous artists taught by all the teachers in school
- a wonderful exhibition displaying some high quality work by children at Newbridge
- art/craft workshops run by our excellent Year Six children
…and many other activities!
The week came to a close with a wonderful house event themed on India, where the children worked with all ages on a range of Indian Art activities. It was a great way of ending the week and we’re sure all the children were talking about it!
The Art theme has continued as the Year Six children are still completing the wonderful mural in the upper school cloakroom and work on the lower school playground mural is well underway. We received great feedback from staff, parents and our children about the week and we feel so pleased that the week was a great success!
(A huge ‘thank you’ to Miss Higginbotham and Mr Baigent for organising such an exciting and rewarding week, to Miss Simpson and Miss Wells for organising the India house event and to all the staff who once again pulled out all the stops to make it happen. We also thank Councillor Loraine Brinkhurst for enabling our children to work with the British Olympic Artist, Kevin Whitney. Last, but certainly not least, a huge debt of gratitude goes to our all our volunteers and in particular, Jane Callan, Carol Hinton, Jo Sutton, Karen Wallis, Sally and Neil McDonnell. Jane and Carol have virtually lived at school working on the two murals! Our gratitude goes to them all and to our excellent Year 6 pupil teachers!’ Mr Croker)

On Thursday 9th July 56 children from the Lower School played in a 6-a-side football tournament. We all had fun and got lots of exercise. Team Yoda won for the Year 2s and Rangers won for Reception and Year 1. We would like to say thank you to Chris and Jake for being great referees and Mr Cumpson for helping to set up the pitches. Thank you to Cabi and Matt Grosvenor, my mummy and daddy, for organising the event to raise money for the adventure trail. Finally thank you to everyone who supported us.
By Rosie, 2B.
(‘I believe it should be a ‘thank you’ to the Grosvenor family, who found the time amidst a very busy life, to organise a great event (and report on it!). Well done to all our future Frank Lampards too!’ Mr Croker)

Film Making at Oldfield
On Thursday 9th July 18 children from year four 4 went to a film-making day at Oldfield School. When we arrived we got put into groups of six or seven. We had to perform Theseus and the Minotaur, but the great thing was we got to change it. In the morning we wrote our scripts and made props. In the afternoon we got to film our plays. “In my group I was Theseus”, said Lily “and in my group I was a man eating turtle and a guard” said Daniel. ‘We had lots of fun!’’
We would like to thank Miss Wells and Mr Proudman (a teacher at Oldfield) for organising it all and the adults that helped us on the way.

YEAR 4 CRICKET COACHING
Year 4 have enjoyed 5 weeks of some great cricket coaching. First we did some fielding and catching, then some batting skills and to finish we learnt how to bowl. Our coach, Stuart, taught us some fantastic tactics to help us remember our moves. Then we had two phenomenal games where the standard had clearly risen. We did a catching competition every time. A few people got to go to the cricket club with Tom Baker, but those people had a lot of fun anyway!! In a few weeks we can’t wait to have a cricket festival. We would like to give thanks to our coach Stuart and everyone who has supported us.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.05

BITS AND PIECES
Ø As a brilliant Arts Week draws to a close, there will be more information about what has been going on before the end of term.
Ø The new adventure trail will be opened at next Saturday’s Summer Fete and will be used by the children from Monday 13th July onwards. The equipment has been installed and now the Astroturf is being laid.
Ø A massive ‘thank you’ and ‘well done!’ to our Groundforce Day 3 team who achieved so much in just a few hours. The new pond has been completed in the Conservation Area, the wildflower meadow has been sown and the Spiritual Garden further developed. We will return after the summer hols!

PARENTS AND CARERS - PLEASE BE VIGILANT
Without wishing to raise undue alarm, I feel I should inform you that, recently, there have been three attempted abductions in the Bristol area. It seems sensible to share this information with you with the summer holidays imminent. Before the end of term we will be quietly reminding the children about dealing with strangers.
Mr Croker

MAKING A DIFFERENCE … LAST CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
No doubt you have seen the posters around the school and in the local community advertising two coffee mornings next week: Monday 6th July and Wednesday 8th July. Each one starts in the Blue Room at 9.00 and finishes around 10.30am. This will be a chance to celebrate all our existing volunteers and the fabulous work they do. It will also be an opportunity to welcome potential volunteers and outline our ambitious plans for the future which will benefit our children but also enable us to better serve the community. If you want to offer your help in any way, come along to one of the mornings!

THANK YOU ………
to everyone who donated old logo school uniform to the Ragbag Project! The sweatshirts are being laundered and parcelled up to send off to a children’s charity based in South Africa. Homestead is a charity for street children, who call in, have their first shower in months, a set of clean clothes and a meal, before they go back on the streets to try and find somewhere to sleep that night. Julian and Kirsty, who run the charity, also ask people to collect up the small sample soaps and shampoos. If anyone has a collection of these stashed away at home and would like to add them to the parcel, please see Hala Langan (Meg’s Mum 2B) asap.

WELL DONE!
Thank you to all the children from 1R who helped at last week’s Curriculum Evening. You did a fantastic job – well done!

PUPIL PARLIAMENT
On Monday 29th June, Hannah (3H) and Joseph (4W) went to Bath Spa University to take part in a Pupil Parliament. It was the first of its kind. When we got there we went to the theatre and we got split into four groups. Newbridge were in Twiverton 101 with a number of other schools and one by one we went up and presented our ideas to the other schools. Once all the schools had presented their ideas each person had to vote on who they thought should present their ideas in the theatre later on and Newbridge were voted through. When we presented our ideas in the big theatre sadly we didn’t get voted in. The idea that was voted highest was a very good idea, so although it wasn’t our idea we were very pleased. We would like to thank Mr Cumpson for taking us.

(‘This is a first for Newbridge and all Bath Schools. The Council, in conjunction with the University, are hoping to hold two of these children’s parliaments a year so that our children’s voice is heard and acted upon. Well done to Joseph, Hannah and Mr Cumpson on being such fantastic representatives!’ Mr Croker)

TAG RUGBY REPORT
On Saturday 27th June Newbridge Tag Rugby team went to the Recreation Ground to play rugby. In the morning we played lots of warm ups with Paulton Juniors and in the afternoon we played matches. We played St Mary’s first and we won, then we played St Nicholas Primary which we also won. For our last match we played Saltford but sadly we lost 7-6. We were supposed to play one more match against St Phillip’s but we ran out of time. If we had won that we would have come top of our group. It was the end of the tournament and we won 2 games.
By Rhys 3H
(‘ Our squad of twelve Year 3 and 4 players were amazing. With only two practice sessions under their belts they went on to play at least as well as the Lions! They played with great spirit and togetherness which was matched by the support from all our fantastic supporters. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them all.’ Mr Croker)

NPSA NEWS – Summer Fete Special
Newbridge Summer Fete – Saturday 11th July 2.00pm – 4.30pm

Summer is upon us and the fete is fast approaching and hopefully the good weather will continue! It should be a great day, what with the competitions, cream teas, bouncy castle obstacle course, barbecue, magician, penalty shootout, events and all the other fantastic stalls! It should also be an affordable afternoon as we have kept the prices low with most games priced at 20 pence and lots of free activities such as Bryan the Magician and all the events and displays!

Now, to the important bit! This is the event, more than any other, which needs the support of the whole school to be successful. And, I am afraid that we are yet again going to ask you to donate your goods and time! Thank you to all who have already volunteered to help run a stall but we still have some stalls yet to find an owner! Here is a list:

Treasure Map
Lose your Marbles
Flying Saucers
The Egg Game
Face paints
New books

If you are able to volunteer by yourself or with a group of families, then please pop a note in the NPSA tray, email
npsa@hotmail.co.uk. If you are put off because you do not know what these games are – don’t be! They are all set up and ready to run and all very straightforward! So, please come forward!

We also need an army of helpers on the Friday before the fete to help label up the tombolas, wrap the lucky dip etc. If you can help, please come along to the Blue Room on the morning of Friday the 10th July.

As you are aware without all your kind donations, events like the Summer Fete could not happen – so please keep them coming in!
Here is a list of what each year group is being asked to contribute:

Years 2, 4 and 6 – Sweetie Jars (You should find these in your book-bags next week. Please fill them! No nuts please.)
Years 1, 3 and 5 – Chocolate for the Chocolate Tombola (No nuts please.)
Reception – Plain scones or a jar of strawberry jam (This would be a great contribution for our cream teas! Home made or shop bought! No nuts please.)

In addition, Friday 10th July is Mufti Day and in exchange for wearing mufti we are asking the whole school to bring a tombola prize for the adult tombola. For example, a bottle of wine, an alcoholic beverage, some nice olive oil, a box of chocolates, some special biscuits, a particularly nice chutney etc.

So, where do you have to bring all these goodies? Well, we would like you to bring them in on Friday the 10th July – the day before the fete and bring them to the Blue Room. If you do not drop-off on a Friday then bring them in anytime next week and leave them in reception.

I would also like to put out an appeal for any toys or books you are getting rid of. If they are in good condition, please bring them to school any time next week and there will be a box waiting to receive them outside reception. They will find a good home on the second-hand stall at the fete! Both adult and children’s books gratefully received!

Thank you in advance for all your kind donations. In a week when the builders have started work on the adventure play trail, it really shows how much good your kind support does. Bringing in goodies and volunteering to run stalls really does make a difference to our children’s education!
