NEWSLETTER Issue: 2.06

HEAD'S VIEW
I have set myself something of a challenge……I promised a ‘round up’ of life at Newbridge since September and I am sitting at my desk wondering how on earth I could encapsulate all that has happened, and all that is good, about our school. I am going to stick to one side of paper because, as you know girls and boys, I do get carried away …..sometimes.

I will start with the children. From day one in September, you have impressed us. Our new children in Reception settled in so well (too well as some fell asleep during our assemblies!) and our Year 6 have quickly shown us, with their enthusiasm and excellent attitudes towards all aspects of school life, that they are going to be a vintage year. In fact, the vast majority of our children have given their best, are really moving on in their learning and they generally live up to the ideals of the school’s ‘Statement of Intent’. Well done, girls and boys, we are all so proud of you for being such decent, hard working people and great fun too!

There have been many, many highlights. I sit here with ‘Hosanna Rock’ and the Upper School Carol Concert songs still running through my head. Last night the choir sang at the Abbey and last Friday at the RUH and two local care centres for the elderly. Each occasion left us feeling privileged to be part of this school. The word ‘magical’ comes to mind. We have seen countless other examples of excellence across all areas of learning too where a particular child has produced their very best. Then there are the ‘extras’ that can sometimes be taken for granted. Our aim to give our children opportunities to find their interests and develop their talents has seen a myriad of clubs on offer. Furthermore, it is wonderful, for example, to see a team entering the Lego Robotics Regional Competition for the first time, more Year 5 & 6 children than before stepping up for the National Primary Maths Challenge, over 100 children learning a musical instrument ……. I could go on! We will all walk away too with strong memories from theme week when World War II spies, Romans and Celts having a difference of opinion, brave knights, Humpty Dumpty and Ancient Greeks all combined to make our school …….umm………different!

Our community has given very generously to the Genesis Trust with our Harvest produce, raised nearly £500 for RUH’s ‘Forever Friends’ appeal (and another £150 collected while the choir were singing last Friday), provided a special Christmas for children in Romania with the shoebox appeal and helped Miss Simpson and Miss Wells achieve their goal of finding out about schools and life in India in February. As regards Ted’s Big Day Out, I can now confirm that our teddy bear singalong was the largest on record! Your support for all these campaigns is hugely appreciated.

We are very grateful too for the work of the Newbridge Primary School Association. The NPSA just keeps going from strength to strength. September’s AGM (greatly helped by the cheese n’ wine aspect I suspect!) set us on the right path with good numbers turning out and lots of new faces too. We are so lucky to have such an active association which brings the community together and raises significant funds for the school to help us move forward. We have seen the first coffee morning very well attended, a superb calendar produced, a memorable Christmas Fair, a Saturday table top sale and a cake sale. We are in the debt of all our parents and carers who find the time in their busy lives to give so much back to the school. Our governors are not often mentioned and yet our governing body work tirelessly behind the scenes to give the best to our children. We welcomed two newcomers in Martin Powell as a parent governor and Vanessa Ferrett as clerk. They have quickly settled (‘too much jargon in education’ is one comment richly deserved!) as has Victoria Janseunne who took over the Chair of Governors’ role from Andy Powell. I am sure that our governing body will go from strength to strength too.

Finally, the staff – they are magnificent and I leave you with the words expressed by a parent in a letter received today: ‘..all the staff should be congratulated on their continued hard work and dedication, not only within normal school hours but for all the extra time and effort they give to make the school such a great one.’ Happy Christmas to one and all!

CHOIR ON TOUR
On Friday 12th December Newbridge Primary School’s Choir took part in their tour around Newbridge. First stop was the Royal United Hospital where we sang some very joyful Christmas songs in the Atrium. Then we met a friend called Big Ted and he was dancing around. Another friend of ours came to our school and did an assembly about premature babies and she was called Jo. We all went to the RUH’s Oasis (not a swimming pool!) and had our lunch. Then we walked back to school to drop off the Year 3s and 4s.

The Year 5s and 6s carried on to Newbridge Towers (not a tower!). We sang a few songs and the people there let us have a cake and a drink. Next we went to another old people’s home and sang some more songs and then they let us have a drink and a biscuit and some sweets. They were also very generous and gave us a cheque for £25 and more of their donations.

Thank you to Mrs Houston and Miss Amies for organising the tour. Thanks also to Mr Croker for supporting us and parents for accompanying us.

By Lily, Amy and Darcie.

NEWBRIDGE CHOIR – THANK YOU
A huge big thank you to our fantastic choir. What a busy few weeks! The Choir Tour last Friday was such fun and you made us so proud. This week you have kept up the amazing performances in all our rehearsals, the school concerts and the Abbey on Wednesday.

Well done and thank you. I hope to see you all back next term for more fun and voices.
Mrs Houston

Learning Resource Centre Newsletter Issue: 2

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
So, another year has whizzed by and Christmas is almost upon us!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first three months in the Learning Resource Centre. The staff have made me feel welcome and it’s been great being around so many lovely books. However, the “stars of the piece” have been the children: they have been really friendly, helpful, well-mannered and enthusiastic – they are brilliant! Hope you all have a Fab Christmas and get lots of reading done during the Christmas holidays! Tony Day, LRC Manager

WELL DONE PUPIL LIBRARIANS
I’d like to publicly say a big thank you to each of the following Pupil Librarians, who have helped me in the library during break, lunchtimes and after school:
Amelia, Emily, Jasmin, Matthew, Jakees, Jacob, Joda, Isaac, Sherliyn, Alayna , Hannah and Harrison.
Other children have also generously given their help on an ad hoc basis. Each, in their own way and own style, has already made a great contribution to the Library. The above children will continue as Pupil Librarians until around Easter, when all the other children who have volunteered to act as Pupil Librarians will be given their chance.

FUTURE PLANS AND SUGGESTIONS
Looking ahead to 2009, we have lots of ideas for interesting activities centred around reading and writing. These include: author visits, writing competitions, LRC-based quizzes and themed events. These and other ideas will feature in a LRC Calendar of Events currently being prepared.
We also plan to acquire some books especially designed to meet the needs of children with dyslexia.
Also, to assist teachers and parents/carers and the children themselves with the selection of books suitable for them (in terms of reading level) we are considering how best to mark or "band" books.
I have been really impressed by the quality of suggestions already made by pupils. These include Year 6 children writing illustrated stories for the Year 6 children themselves to read to infants – the first story is almost complete!
Suggestions from Parents/Carers are always welcome! If you have any ideas, please feel free to drop in to see me in the LRC after school, send your idea in with your child, give me a ring or send me an e-mail! Thank you

WHAT A SUCCESS!
Since our LRC started lending books on 5 November, over 750 loans have been made to well over 250 children.

PLEASE COME AND VISIT!
If you haven’t yet visited the school LRC, please do, we’d love to see you. We are open after school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until 4.45pm

UNWANTED BOOKS & AUDIO BOOKS
If anyone has any books or audio books, that they no longer want, they would be gratefully received. They must be in good condition please and suitable for primary school age. Thank you very much to everyone who has already donated items. We now have enough videos and DVDs thank you. These will be made available for teachers to show in classrooms as special “treats” for the children. If you can bring or send in any books, please let me know who they are from so I know who to thank!

LOVE BOOKS AND CHILDREN?!
I would like to open the LRC Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well, to widen the access the children have to all the brilliant resources we have. However, some volunteer effort will be needed to make this possible. If you are interested, please contact me. Thank you.

FREE BOOKS FOR SCHOOLS!
Each day during the school term in 2009, The Times and The Sunday Times will contain tokens that can be redeemed for free books for schools. If you read these papers, I would be very grateful if you could please collect the tokens and pass them on to me. Many thanks.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 2.05

HEAD’S VIEW
It is a very brief one this week but next week’s will be an epic (in length if not content) as I look back over a busy and successful term.

Please find attached a questionnaire which the National Association of Headteachers (NAHT) is asking schools throughout the country to circulate to their parents so they can take forward the views of the many. It centres on the value and effectiveness of Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6) under the present format. I know it is a busy time of year, and questionnaires certainly do not feature high on your priority list at present, but it should only take a couple of minutes to complete and your views would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support.

Standards in all aspects of school life are so important and there are two areas that are slipping just a little at present. The first is lateness to school. I know there are often good reasons for lateness but often there are not. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of children arriving in good time and having a calm and settled start to the day. The other issue is uniform. The vast majority of children are beautifully turned out and reflect the pride we all have in our school. But, lately, we have noticed a number of children who are not dressed according to our uniform policy. I would like to emphasise that black shoes, not trainers, are to be worn and fleeces etc can be worn to school and at playtimes but not in school. The school sweatshirt or cardigan can be worn over the polo shirt in school. Please find attached the uniform policy. Your support in both these areas is much appreciated.

SWIMMING GALA
On Wednesday 26th November some children from Years 5 and 6 sang ‘wheels on the coach go round and round’ on the coach all the way to the Bath Sports and Leisure Centre, to take part in the Bath and North East Somerset Schools Swimming Festival! Every one had an amazing time, swimming in relays, medleys and single races. Although we came 6th out of 7 schools, we all enjoyed it. The only bad thing was the changing rooms!! With thousands of people treading on your clothes and taking your towel, by then it was 4.00pm and time to go home and we were all exhausted!

We would like to thank Mrs Bartlett for organising our races, Mr Croker and Mrs Roberts for coming with us and giving us unlimited support, whether we needed it or not!!
By Grace – 6CS
(‘Our children are a pleasure to be with. Very supportive, sporting in attitude and they gave their best in the pool. Well done!’ Mr Croker)

YEAR 3 TRIP TO THE ROMAN BATHS
On Tuesday 2nd December Year 3 went to the Roman Baths. It was very exciting on the big coach and some of us went on the white mini-bus. We went to the classroom and had three activities. We got dressed up in Roman clothes and we paid for objects we would need to go to the Roman Baths. The interesting sandals were too expensive. The coins were very heavy and the patterns were very funny.

Looking out of the window at the Great Bath it was really hard to imagine it was from the Roman times and 2000 years old. Looking down through the glass at the dark orange drain it felt like you were flying. Then we got the little telephones and dialled the number to know what we were looking at – we didn’t know they had hot and cold baths and games in the water. We looked at cutlery found in the Roman Baths, like a spoon to open oysters with. We liked the mosaics and the Gorgon’s Head that looked like a sun. We had a very nice morning.
By Harry, Elizabeth, Emma, Johan and George– 3B.
(‘What a wonderful description of your visit – I now want to go back to the Roman Baths and look around again! Well done Harry, Elizabeth, Emma, Johan and George.’ Mr Croker)

NPSA NEWS
Christmas Fair Thanks
I am thrilled to announce that the Christmas Fair raised a whopping £2000 for our school. The Christmas Fair is not only a great fundraiser but, just as importantly, it is a really magical night for the children. So many people are responsible for making it such a success that it is impossible to mention them all. However, I would like to thank the organising committee, the class reps, the staff and teachers of the school, all those who came and helped that day (both in the preparation during the day and running the stalls on the night), those who donated cakes, chocolate, tombola prizes, gifts, sweetie jars and wrapping paper and, finally, to each and every one of you who came out on Thursday night and made the fair so much fun!

I would also like to thank all of those who donated raffle gifts and prizes. These include Sian Blunos, Bath Bakery, Heaven Scent Beauty in Batheaston, Window Dressing, Riverford Organic Vegetables, Phoenix Cards, Chelsea Clipper, Jackie Ainsworth’s Forever Aloe, Desh Indian Food, Kindling Coffee, the Hardware Store Chelsea Rd, the off-licence Chelsea Rd, Naughty but Nice, Diane Day, Rebecca Bleeker, Genesis Gym, Abbey Cameras, Lower Weston Post Office and Sarah Aygul who baked a gorgeous gingerbread house cake! Thank you to you all!

By the way, if anyone has any feedback, positive or negative, please email us on
npsa@hotmail.co.uk or pop it in the NPSA tray. All comments are welcome and will help us provide an even better fair next year!

NPSA Expenditure
Seeing as we are constantly asking you to donate either money, goods or time for one reason or another, I thought we should let you know how the money you are so instrumental in raising is spent. So, here is what NPSA funds have provided so far this year!

v An outdoor classroom in the conservation area
v More books for the library
v Wet weather games and toys for all the classrooms
v Waterproofs for reception children for wet playtime
v Year 4 trip to Egg Theatre to see ‘The Nutcracker’
v Cookery ingredients for lower and upper school cooking sessions

Thank you for all your support and please keep it coming!

NPSA Fundraising Idea (by Sharon Alcock)
You may have noticed a bit of a fashion buzz in the drop-off zones last week… fifteen mums tried out a new fundraising idea over the week-end – a frock swap based on the BBC TV programme hosted by Twiggy! We all brought along no longer wanted clothes and accessories, along with a few bottles of wine(!) to one of our homes – and swapped for a (very) small fee! EVERYONE went home happy, with new outfits. We had a great and sociable evening, our clothes were recycled and we raised almost £90.00 for the school. It was such fun! Watch out for a special PTA pack – available in the New Year from Reception – which will tell you exactly how to repeat the experience with very little hassle, including printable info. All we ask in return is for any money raised to be donated to NPSA funds - and you get the new clothes! Who needs sales?!

Christmas Decorations
Thank you to all those who ventured out into the cold last Monday night to help decorate the School halls! They look great!

School Calendars
Just to let you know that if you ordered a calendar, you will be receiving it on Monday 15th December. Please put a carrier bag in your child’s bookbag that morning and pick up your calendar along with your child!

(‘Keep up the fantastic work! Last year our school association won a national award, I think we should be heading for an international award! Well done to everyone in the NPSA.’ Mr Croker)

Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis so please contact the office as soon as possible if you wish to come. You will not need tickets for the Lower School performances of ‘Hosanna Rock’.

PLEASE NOTE……
- It was reported to us today by a very concerned parent that three Newbridge girls (identities unknown) ran out across Newbridge Road without looking, at the end of school on Wednesday, and put themselves at great risk. PLEASE TAKE CARE.
- Mr Croker has been contacted by residents on Charmouth Road who, at the end of school, are having litter thrown on to their property, their walls climbed and even having some of our children going on to their property. This is no doubt a minority but please report this to Mr Croker if you see it happening again.

Mr Croker has spoken to the children about the above. Please can parents and carers do all they can to ensure the safety and conduct of our children at the beginning and end of the school day. Thank you.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE - NOVEMBER
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well! The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

LAST OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THE COUNCIL THAT WE CARE ABOUT HOME-SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN B&NES - AND THAT THEY SHOULD TOO
Newbridge Primary School parents and children have been fantastically supportive of the campaign to improve home-school transport in B&NES - thank you! We need your help one last time - please come along to the Guildhall on Monday 8 December at 5.15pm, ready for the Public Contributor session in the Banqueting Room at 5.30pm. Our bit of the meeting will be over by 6pm, so it won't be a long session. Thanks again for your support - it makes all the difference.

HOCKEY MATCHES
On Sunday 23rd November two hockey teams from Newbridge Primary School went up to the University of Bath to play in a hockey league. The teams were Newbridge and Newbridge A. The first match was Newbridge vs Newbridge A. The teams both played very well with an ending score of 7-1 to Newbridge. The second match was Newbridge vs Team Bath Buccaneers Cadets. Newbridge worked very well as a team and the ending score in the match was 3-0 to Newbridge. This was a very good score because Team Bath Buccaneers are a proper Hockey club. The third game was Newbridge A vs Team Bath Buccaneers Daggers. Newbridge A tried their hardest but sadly they lost 2-0. It was then time for Newbridge to face Team Bath Buccaneers Daggers. This game went well and the ending score was 3-1 to Newbridge. The final match was Newbridge A vs Team Bath Buccaneers Cadets. This match was sadly unsuccessful with the ending score of 2-0 to Team Bath Buccaneers Cadets. So at the end of the day Newbridge had won all their matches and ended up top of the division.

We would like to thank Mrs Kennaugh for coaching us and Mrs Bartlett, Mr Croker and all the parents for supporting us.
Harriet – 6A and Jay – 6CS.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION
On Wednesday 26th November Newbridge Robotics Team (Robogenuises) went to Bristol for the FLL Robotics Challenge 2008. The day started with the opening ceremony at 10.30am. There were over 1000 people there. After the opening ceremony we did our presentation in front of the judges. Then came the robot competition round. In round 1 we collected 15 points. In the second round we got 55 and on the last round we got 50 (which is good for the first time there). We came 29th out of 40 in the Robot Challenge. We had challenges to do during the day and we won a chocolate prize for the word searches.

The team was Molly, John, Charlie, Joda, Matthew, Jacob, Callum, Jack and Will and the supporting crew were Bex, Austen and Max. It was a fun day. Thank you to all our parents for taking us and Miss Wells and Mr Cumpson for organising the day.
By John and Molly.

NPSA CHRISTMAS FAIR Thursday 4th December 5.00pm – 7.00pm
Well, Christmas has arrived at Newbridge Primary School and as the children of Newbridge have behaved so well throughout the year Father Christmas has confirmed that he is on his way to our school and will be with us next Thursday!

It should be a great evening and to get us in the Christmas Spirit, the school choir will be kicking off the festivities. All the old favourites will be there - such as Santa’s Grotto, the chocolate tombola, splat the rat and the craft room, where children can make cards and baubles. There are also a few new additions like the ‘Wrap a gift for Someone Special Stall’, where your child can select and wrap a surprise gift for you, and ‘Shy Santa’ which is a festive version of a coconut shy! There are plenty of other exciting stalls both old and new along with a great selection of outside traders. Don’t forget that this is an event for the whole family and the Reindeer Restaurant will be serving pizza, mince pies and hot and cold drinks so you can have your supper before you go home!

You will be issued with a Christmas Fair Guide (which includes a map) next week, to help you negotiate around the various stalls and games. Both the top and bottom gates will be open to facilitate access.

Now, to the important bit! This is the event, more than any other, which needs the support of the whole school to be successful and I am afraid that we are yet again going to ask you to donate your goods and time! Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help on the day of the fair but we still have slots to fill. So, please, approach your class rep and put your name down to help set up or run a stall or to stay and clean up afterwards.

Here is a list of what each year group is being asked to contribute:

Years 4 and 6 – Sweetie Jars (You should find these in your book-bags today along with this newsletter, provided all has gone to plan! Please fill them - no nuts please)
Year 5 and Reception – Cakes, glorious cakes (You should find your plates in your book-bags tonight. Please fill them with home made or shop bought cakes – no nuts please.)
Years 1, 2 and 3 – Chocolate for the Chocolate Tombola (No nuts please.)

In addition, Christmas Fair Day is Mufti Day and in exchange for wearing mufti we are asking the whole school to bring a tombola prize. For example, a bottle of wine, an alcoholic beverage, some nice olive oil, a box of chocolates, some special biscuits, a particularly nice chutney etc.

So, where do you have to bring all these goodies? Well, we would like you to bring them in on Thursday the 4th of December – the morning of the fair and bring them to the Blue Room. If you do not drop-off on a Thursday then bring them in anytime next week and leave them in reception.

I would also like to thank all those people who have donated presents and gift wrap for the ‘Wrap a Gift for Someone Special Stall’ and cuddly toys for the ‘Adopt a Teddy’ Stall but, please keep those coming in. They can both be brought to the main reception in the link building and left in the kitchen there.

Thank you in advance for all your kind donations. In a week when the builders have started work on the outside classroom in the conservation area, it really shows how much good your kind support does. Bringing in goodies and volunteering for half an hour really do make a difference to our children’s education!

A TECHNOLOGY TRIP TO HAYESFIELD
On Tuesday 18th November eight of us went to Hayesfield School and made some magnets. We had a biscuit and a drink of orange squash.

We had all made magnets before so we knew how to make them. Once we had made them we did a talk about them and earlier we had written on a bit of card what we enjoyed and we read them out. All of us at the end of the day were presented with a Certificate from the Deputy Head. Then there was lots of food but we couldn’t stay for that!
By Grace and Martha – 3H

(‘Thank you Grace and Martha. We had a marvellous morning at Hayesfield, seeing and talking about the fridge magnets the children made when they were in Year 2. Many of our other current Year 3 children made them but we could only take eight to the presentation. Our children, as always did us proud, and our parents also for being taxi drivers (once again!) and very keen supporters.’ Mr Croker)

NPSA NEWS
Table Top Sale
A big thank you goes out to all of those who helped with this event - to those who lugged the tables in and out of the hall, to those who manned the refreshments, to those who baked all those delicious cakes, to those who hired the tables and, finally, to those who came. The event made a very useful £420 for the school which will go towards subsidising our children’s school trips. However, the turnout of customers was on the low side, which was a shame as those who did come had a great time and came away with some great bargains!
(‘A huge ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ to all involved. Everyone’s efforts and contribution to the school are greatly appreciated.’’ Mr Croker)

Coffee Morning
I am pleased to report that this event was a resounding success – both with the pre-schoolers and their mums and carers. If you are wondering why I said mums rather than parents – it is because not one single dad ventured into the Blue Room that morning except, of course, for our fearless headmaster Mr Croker! Joking aside – dads are welcome, too! I am pleased to announce that the next coffee morning will be held on Monday January the 12th, so put it in your diaries and we will see you there!
(‘I am not sure about fearless but what a great start to what will be a regular feature every term!’ Mr Croker)

Christmas Fair – Thursday 4th December: 5.00pm – 7.00pm
The countdown is on! In less than two weeks time our school will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the evening – complete with Santa’s Grotto, the Reindeer Restaurant and countless games, stalls and tombolas! So, put that date in your diary. Your children will not want to miss this and you will not want to miss the look on their faces when they meet Santa!

Meanwhile, the class reps are busy recruiting an army of helpers for the day and night of the fair – if you can help out in any way big or small – just make yourself known to your class rep. We really do need you and without the kind support of Newbridge parents and carers events like this cannot happen. We would also love to see grandparents getting involved too – so let us know what you can do, even half an hour makes a difference!

Our plea this week is for teddy bears. Please bring in all those cuddly toys which are no longer getting the love they deserve in your household and we pledge to find them a new home where they will be loved, cherished and adored. We will do so by means of the ‘Adopt a Teddy’ stall at the Christmas Fair and a box has been placed in the Blue Room Kitchen in readiness for your kind donations!

We are also in need of volunteers to make tea and coffee on the evening of the fair so anyone out there who can remain calm amidst a sea of chaos and is good at multi-tasking or can simply serve with a smile, your school needs you! To come forward just send us an email at
npsa@hotmail.co.uk or pop a note in the NPSA letter box in reception! You will be very much appreciated!

Deck the Halls – Monday 1st December: 7.00pm
Come along on Monday 1st December from 7.00pm to help decorate the School halls for Christmas. Festive refreshments will be provided and both dads and mums are needed in great numbers!

CELEBRATING WRITING
Dear family
I miss you so much. How are you? I have just arrived in Britain. It is soaking wet, however it is extremely cold. The centurion was even angrier than a beaming lion. I felt so annoyed and tired on the way to Britain. Training was very tough. The centurion was shouting like mad but it was quite fun during the training. The centurion gave us three minutes rest. When we finished we made some bread and lentil stew. My hands were all gooey and sticky. It was very hard work.

Mum, Dad, the testudo training was fun but it was very squashy and dark. It was hard though. We practised throwing rocks and spears.

This is the exciting but scary war! We marched to the hill forts in a testudo. When we got to the hill forts the crazy, naked, blue Celts threw spears and rocks at us but we stayed in a testudo. It felt like thunder striking on my shield, but when they were in a testudo they broke up and we won! We killed all the Celts.

Before I come back from Britain I have to eat my bread and lentil stew. Yum! I hope I come home soon, bye from Faisal.

You should have received a letter today about yesterday’s recoding of our own CD. Please remember orders need to be in by Friday 21st November. Thank you.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – OCTOBER
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!

The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

NEWBRIDGE CHOIR
Hark the Newbridge Angels Sing
On Thursday we recorded our own Newbridge music CD! The school hall became a recording studio. I sang in the school choir, singing ‘Happy Day’ from Sister Act, 'Happy Ending' by Mika and 'It'’s a Magical Christmas'. I also sang in the Blues Band's 'Newbridge Christmas Blues'. It was scary to start with but once I'd got into it I enjoyed it.

We are looking forward to performing live in the Christmas Concert on Tuesday 16th December. The choir are performing in the Abbey on Wednesday 17th December too! By Poppy - 6A

By the way, both the main gate and the Newbridge Hill Gate will be open to make it easier to transport your goodies home! Entrance £1 and children are free! So, come and support your school and grab a bargain at the same time!

Coffee Morning – Monday 17th November 9.00am – 10.00am in the Blue Room

Christmas Fair – Thursday 4th December from 5.00pm – 7.00pm
The Christmas Fair is fast approaching so put the date in your diaries because it is not to be missed! The good news is that those careless elves have located Santa’s Grotto (with the help of a very kind teaching assistant)! So, panic ye not, Santa has his grotto back and the elves have been forgiven!
For the first time this year, we are introducing a 'Wrap a present for someone special' Stall. This will be run by the parents, carers and children of year 6. It involves children entering a classroom, without their parents or carers, where they will be helped to select and wrap a present with which to surprise someone they love. To this end, we would like to ask you to donate a small present for this stall. It should be something which is suitable for a mum, dad or carer. Bring it to the main reception next week where there will be a box awaiting your donations. We would also be grateful for any sheets or rolls of Christmas wrapping paper you could spare us! So, thank you in advance for your continuing generosity!

Newbridge Primary School Calendar 2009
As was mentioned in last week's NPSA News, our school is producing its very own calendar starring each and every child! The children will be featured in the month in which they have their birthday. So, if your child was born in June, he/she will have their photo taken with all the other children who have June birthdays. To make the calendar more interesting we have decided to give each month a seasonal theme, as set out in the list below.
January – Winter - Bring, hats, scarves and gloves
February – St Valentine’s - Wear red tops and bring along something heart-shaped if possible, or a rose
March – Spring - Wear dark trousers/skirts and white tops, flowers to be provided
April – April Showers - Bring wellies or boots, raincoats and colourful umbrellas
May – Music - Wear jeans or denim skirts and black or grey tops
June – Teddy Bear’s Picnic - Wear pink or brown tops and bring two teddies
July – Sports - Wear sports gear – any kit e.g. running, dancing, gym, football, cricket, props to be provided
August – Beach Holiday - Wear light blue t-shirts and bring buckets and spades, beach balls or snorkels
September – Autumn Leaves - Bring wellies/boots and raincoats and, if possible, a bag of dried leaves
October – Hallowe’en - Wear dark trousers/skirts, orange or yellow tops and bring pumpkins, lanterns or broomsticks
November – Remembrance - Wear dark trousers/skirts and dark tops, and bring poppies
December – Carol singing - Wear jeans, green tops, bring tinsel or baubles

So, dress your children according to their birth month on Friday the 21st of November – Mufti Day.

For those of you who wish to purchase a calendar, we will be taking orders at the Christmas Fair and you will receive them before the end of the term, so you will be able to give them as presents!
A big thank you goes out to those who have agreed to sponsor the calendar and, also, to those who have volunteered to help out on the 21st November. Extra help is always appreciated, so if you wish to help, just pop a note in our brand new bright red NPSA letter box in the main reception or, alternatively, send an email to npsa@hotmail.co.uk.

NPSA News

Newbridge Primary School Calendar 2009
Please don’t rush out to the shops and buy a new calendar, as we will be producing our very own fundraising Newbridge Primary School Calendar 2009. Each month will display a group photo of all the pupils with a birthday in that month. The photos will be taken on Friday 21st November and on that day we will be asking the children to wear a particular coloured top and/or bring along a seasonal prop (e.g. wellies and umbrellas)! We will give you more information in next week’s newsletter, but in the meantime, please hang onto your pumpkins and poppies, and if you have a pile of dry leaves in your garden, please collect them in a bag! We will be taking orders for the calendar in the week of the Christmas Fair, and will get them back to you before the end of term, so that you can also use them as Christmas Pressies.

We are also looking for sponsors for each month of the calendar in order to reduce overheads - a minimum donation of £25 will feature your company’s logo on one month. If you are interested in this once in a blue moon marketing opportunity, please email npsa@hotmail.co.uk or contact Stephanie Massie via the NPSA tray in Reception by 12th November.

If you would also relish the idea of marshalling over 400 children into 12 photo sets in 1 day and are free for either the morning or afternoon of 21st November, please, please contact Stephanie (as above).

Cake Sale
A big, big thank you to all year 1 and 5 parents who baked and organised such a fantastic cake sale (we liked the way you set out the room - it was much less frantic than usual). Thanks, of course, to everyone who bought and ate all the yummy cakes. We made over £180 which has really set the standard for the rest of the year!

Table Top Sale
There are only a few spaces left for tables, so to grab one of these for a reasonable £5 all you have to do is send an email to
npsa@hotmail.co.uk or call Sarah on 07833391970. We do still need volunteers to help take money on the door and sell refreshments on the day - so if you can possibly help for half an hour - please contact Sarah (as above).

Santa's Grotto
The naughty elves have asked if anyone has any old white sheets that they could donate to rebuild Santa's Grotto. If you can help them, please contact the elves at
npsa@hotmail.co.uk or leave a message in the NPSA tray in Reception.

NPSA Committee Meeting
The next NPSA Committee Meeting will be held in the Blue Room on Monday the 10th of November at 7.30pm. Please feel free to come along - it is always great to see new faces and old ones too, of course!

NPSA Coffee Morning
The first coffee morning (open to all parents and carers) will now be held in the Blue Room on Monday 17th November and not on Thursday 13th November. The best coffee and company in Bath from 9.00am to 10.00am.

Nearly New Uniform Sales

Thank you to Sarah Kniveton who has volunteered to organise Nearly New Uniform Sales. If you would like to help Sarah, please email npsa@hotmail.co.uk or pop a note in the NPSA tray. Watch this space for more information.

HEAD'S VIEW
What a wonderful way to finish our first term of the year!
This week we have seen some very strange sights. Roman legions going toe to toe with bean bags and sponge javelins on one day, King Arthur welcoming sixty new knights and ladies at Camelot on another. Humpty Dumpty has been put back together once and for all, while a very smartly dressed team beat the deadline to produce the world’s best newspaper. Some very special puppets have appeared, complete with their homes, and, at the same time, children now understand what it is like to carry ID cards and live under the shadow of World War II. Never mind Beijing, we have seen Athenians and Spartans taking part in a serious Olympics………and there is much, much more.

Learning has truly come alive and I am fairly sure that some of the events of the last five days will be remembered for years to come. Well done to all the staff who have burnt the midnight oil planning such memorable experiences and thank you to all our parents who have given their time and resources to help us provide a very rich experience for our children. As for the children, we think you are brilliant!

Now it is time for half term and a brief rest. It is very well deserved. See you all again on Wednesday the 5th.

PLEASE NOTE CALENDAR CHANGES
Ø The Elm class assembly will now be on Tuesday 18th November at 2.45am and not on Tuesday 11th November as previously stated.

PE KIT
Please could everyone ensure that ALL children have the appropriate PE kit in school at ALL times.

There are lots of children not able to take part effectively in PE lessons as they do not have the correct clothing and shoes.
Also please make sure that all of the kit is clearly labelled as items do go missing or are placed in lost property.

BOOK FAIR
Many thanks to all the children, parents and carers who supported the Book Fair last week. We had a fantastic turnout. We will be using our commission to purchase resource books to enhance learning throughout the school.

Thanks again and watch out for our next Book Fair, sometime in the New Year.

('Thank you to Mrs Rhodes for organising a very successful Book Fair.' Mr Croker)

REACH FOR THE SUN
Out with this week's Newsletter is a pack giving full information on 'Reach for the Sun', a whole school approach towards learning and embedding number bonds and times tables.

In addition to detailing the progression towards 'the Sun', the pack includes sample questions and handy hints to help you support your child’s learning.

Should you have any queries, feel free to contact your child's class teacher or Mrs Phillips, Maths subject leader.

('We need your support in helping our children become fluent in their basic number skills. Those long car journeys, times around the dinner table and quiet moments at home present ideal times to practise additions, subtractions, tables and so on in a fun way. The 'Reach for the Sun' sheets are an incentive to help equip our children with such important life skills.' Mr Croker)

LINK ROMANIA – FAMILY SHOEBOX APPEAL
As in previous years, we are again collecting gift filled shoeboxes. This year is slightly different in that we have chosen a new charity. 'Link Romania' is a Christian charity and has been operating since 1991 supporting the poor and needy in Eastern Europe, principally Romania. These shoeboxes are given to a family, rather than an individual child, so the contents may be slightly different from other charities boxes. Included with this newsletter should be a leaflet that explains everything you should need to know to help you complete a box. If you have any questions please speak to Mrs Teresa Bateman (TA in Foundation stage) or look at
www.linkromania.co.uk

Please note this is not compulsory – it is completely your choice whether you choose to contribute to this or not. If you would like to contribute could you please bring your completed box in to school by Friday 14th November.

YEAR 6 ISLE OF WIGHT RESIDENTIAL TRIP
There will be an information meeting for Year 6 parents/carers and children
on Thursday 6th November at 6.30pm in the Upper School Hall.

NEWBRIDGE CHRISTMAS CD!
We are all looking forward to cutting our own Christmas Music CD on Thursday 13th November. The whole school will be involved in some way!

Over the holiday, please would parents and carers ensure that there are lots of opportunities for practice for the blues band, orchestra, recorders, choir and brass group. Thank you. Miss Amies and Mrs Houston.

WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE
Poppies will be on sale in school on Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th and Friday 7th November.

INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Individual photographs will be taken in school on Monday 10th November.
Don’t forget your hair brush and your sunny smile!

TED'S BIG DAY OUT
We raised a fantastic £455.00. Many thanks to everyone who contributed
to this appeal.

('A huge 'well done' to everyone for contributing towards the RUH appeal. Every penny will help a premature baby in the future. We also had great fun in our special singalong assembly and quite the best singing I have heard as a whole school. Thank you.' Mr Croker)

DINNER MONEY
All dinners must be taken on a weekly basis. The cost of dinners is £9.25 per week. Please send the money in on a Monday morning, in an envelope with your child's name and class on it. All cheques to be made payable to B&NES please.

Dinner money for the coming term is as follows:

November 18 days at £1.85 = £33.30
December 15 days at £1.85 = £27.75
£61.05

NPSA NEWS
Table Top Sale
The good news is that you can now rent a table for a reasonable £5.00. To do so all you have to do is send an email to
npsa@hotmail.co.uk or call Sarah on 07833391970. Remember that tables will be allocated on a first come first served basis and must be paid for in advance, so book today! If you only have a few items to sell how about joining together with a friend and sharing a table and the fee! By the way, the tables are actually two tables joined together, so don’t worry about bringing too much to sell! We do still need volunteers on the day - so if you can possibly help - please call or email Sarah as above.

Christmas Fair Update
I start this section with some bad news - Santa's Grotto has been mislaid by the elves whose job it is to protect it! So Santa needs your help and has asked me to appeal to all the parents and carers out there who might have any red, green, gold or silver material or Christmas lights to donate it to the school, so those careless elves can start making a new one!

On a more cheerful note, here is the list of stalls and games for this year's Christmas Fair. Each year group has been given a few stalls and they will be responsible for running those stalls during the fair. We usually ask for volunteers to do a half hour stint but should you feel tempted you are very welcome to volunteer for an hour!

Reception - Lucky Dip, Raffle, Treasure Map
Year 1 - Splat the Rat, Guess What’s in the Stocking, the Craft Room
Year 2 - Frog Game, Hook the Duck, Adult Tombola and Kids' Tombola
Year 3 - Chocolate Tombola, Velcro Dartboard, Glowstick Stall 1
Year 4 - Sweetie Jars, Guess the Weight of the Christmas Cake, Adopt a Teddy
Year 5 - Lose your Marbles, Glowstick Stall 2, Cake Stall
Year 6 - Tattoos, Wrap the Gifts from the 'kids only stall', popcorn sales

Any outside traders who would like a stall at the Christmas Fair this year, should leave a note in the NPSA tray in the main reception or email
npsa@hotmail.co.uk

NPSA Committee Meeting
The next NPSA Committee Meeting will be held in the Blue Room on Monday the 10th of November at 7.30pm. Please feel free to come along - it is always great to see new faces and old ones too, of course!

Nearly New Uniform
Now we have a new uniform, it would be great to have some way of buying and selling nearly new uniform. To this end, I would like to appeal to anyone out there, with great organisational skills and plenty of energy, to be our very first nearly new uniform coordinator. If this is something that would interest you and you have some good ideas on how exactly this can be achieved, then please get in touch either via the NPSA tray or by email to
npsa@hotmail.co.uk.

NEWSLETTER Issue: 1.06

HEAD'S VIEW
I would like to thank the Newbridge community for helping to make our Harvest assembly a very special one. The display of tins and packets of food was quite spectacular and a testimony to the generosity of our families. I know the Genesis Trust are delighted as many of the homeless they support will benefit. Thank you.

We welcome a new boy, Harry, who started in 2C this week. He tells me that everyone has been very kind to him and made him feel welcome. He has yet to go through the welcome in whole school assembly!

Next week is a themed week. We are taking the opportunity to focus on our class topics and do some creative work around them. We are also using the topic week to introduce the skills and attitudes of learning; an emphasis which is part of our development plan. Therefore next week’s timetable and homework will not be the same as usual.

Every child in Years 1 to 6 now has a 'My Learning' folder and this contains the skills and attitudes of learning. We have asked the children to take them home this weekend so our parents and carers can see exactly what we are aiming for. There will be other times in the year when they will be brought home for families to contribute to. Please can parents ensure that the folders are returned on Monday because they will be needed during the course of next week.

THE PRIMARY MATHS CHALLENGE
Calling all budding mathematicians in Years 5 and 6.

Do you like a challenge?
Do you like to push yourself to the limit?
Do you want to take part in a national activity involving more than 100,000 children?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then the Primary Maths Challenge is just for you.

Taking part in November 2008, you will face a series of brain-bending multiple choice puzzles to be completed in 45 minutes. This may lead to you competing against other schools in the Maths Challenge Finals during February 2009.

Check out the website
www.m-a.org.uk and follow the links to Primary Maths Challenge, try out some of the puzzles and see what other children had to say.

If you would like to take part please let Mrs Phillips know (in writing) by 24th October 2008.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE – SEPTEMBER
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!

The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

BATH SCHOOLS HIGH 5 NETBALL TOURNAMENT
On Thursday 9th October two teams of Newbridge Netball players went to a High 5 netball tournament at Oldfield Secondary School. Newbridge B team's first game was against Bathwick. With a few excellent goals Newbridge won 2-4. In the next game Newbridge B beat St Michael's 1-3. But then we were against Oldfield Park and we drew 2-2. The next match was against Newbridge A team. Newbridge B just won, 1-0. Our last game was against St Stephen's and we won again, 1-0. The final results were; St Michael's in 6th, Oldfield Park 5th, Newbridge A 4th, St Stephen's 3rd, Bathwick 2nd and Newbridge B came 1st! By Thea
On Thursday 9th October Newbridge Netball Team A went to the Oldfield Netball Tournament. There were six other schools there; St Michael's, Oldfield Park, Newbridge A, St Stephen's, Bathwick and Newbridge B. Our first game was against St Stephen's and we drew with them 2-2. Our second game was against Oldfield Park and we drew with them as well, 2-2. In our third game we played St Michael's and we unfortunately lost 2-0, despite getting dramatically close to some great nets. Our fourth game was against Newbridge B. There were no losers in this game! But Ava from Team B scored a fab hoop, which left the score 1-0 to them. Overall Newbridge Team A came fourth after some great matches. We had a smashing time. Thanks to Mrs Bartlett for organising it and thank you to the supporters that came along. By Isabella

Well done to all the Year 6 children who participated in the BANES Netball Festival last week. Both teams played extremely well, working together, encouraging each other and generally enjoying themselves.

A big congratulations to Newbridge B who won the tournament and are through to the final in January next year. How pleased was Mrs Bartlett? Thank you to all those parents who supported us and helped to walk the children to Oldfield. – Mrs Bartlett

('A huge 'well done!' to all our netballers and to 'Coach Bartlett'! It is great to see netball continuing to thrive at Newbridge.' Mr Croker.)

NPSA NEWS
Christmas Fair - Thursday 4th December - 5.00pm – 7.00pm
For those of you who are new to the school, this is an event that should not be missed! The school is transformed into a winter wonderland for the children - complete with Santa's Grotto, the ever popular chocolate tombola, splat the rat and plenty of other games and stalls. It starts at 5.00pm and ends at 7.00pm but there is no need to worry about tea time, as hot meals are available as well as tea and coffee. As you can imagine, we need a whole army of helpers either on the day or before to help with the organisation, so what we will be doing is allocating stalls to each class and setting the class reps on you! More seriously, any volunteers would be greatly appreciated and nearer the time we will send out forms enabling you to volunteer for specific time slots throughout the day. Any of you who would like to get involved with the actual organisation, just put your details in the NPSA tray! So, put the date in your diaries and get ready to have some fun!

Update on class reps
The good news is that we now have a class rep for 6A. A big thank you to Lucy Dunford! The bad news is that no-one has come forward from 6CS. So please volunteer quickly before we get your children to nominate you! The other news on the class rep front is that Carla Musgrave has volunteered to help Anette Smidt with 1H. Jo Stevenson - class rep for 6JS - would also like some help with her duties. She works full time and would love to share the role with another parent who actually drops off and picks up. So, parents from 6JS and 6CS, please put your details in the NPSA tray.

Years 1 and 5 Cake Sale - Thursday 23rd October - 3.15pm
Just a reminder to all parents and carers of children in Years 1 and 5 - we need your cakes! Please bring them on Thursday morning to the kitchen in the Blue Room. We also need some volunteers to sell them, so if you could help either for 30 minutes before the end of school, during the cake sale itself for 30 minutes or afterwards to clear up, then let your class rep know. The sale itself will take place in the Blue Room and is open to everyone. Please come and support your school!

Table Top Sale - Saturday 15th November - 10.30am -12.30pm
As mentioned in last week's newsletter, the NPSA is holding a Table Top Sale. It will be held in the main hall and will be open to the public between 10.30am and 12.30pm .Set up will start at 9.30am and the school will be cleared by 1.00pm. If you would like to book a table and sell off some of your no longer needed possessions, the fee is £10. If you want to come and pick up some bargains, the entrance fee is £1. Children are free. We also need volunteers to sell refreshments, take money on the door and bake cakes. To book a table or volunteer your services, please fill in the slip below and return it to school. Thank you.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE NEWSLETTER

WELCOME to the first edition of our Newbridge Learning Resource Centre (LRC) newsletter. This edition provides exciting news of future plans for our brilliant Library and details of when you can start borrowing books! Future editions will be issued periodically to give you details of forthcoming activities and events.

FIRSTLY, A BIG THANK YOU!
Our school library would simply not have been possible without a great deal of hard work by several school parents who generously gave a lot of their own time to plan the library and catalogue and shelve hundreds and hundreds of books. We would therefore like so say a BIG THANK YOU to Sarah Le Butt, Catherine Marlowe, Judy Groves and Kim Noad for all their efforts.
John Croker, Headteacher and Tony Day, LRC Manager.

We’re open for borrowing from 5 November!
Our Library will officially "open for business" on Wednesday, 5 November, when children from Years 3 and 4 will start to be able to borrow books to take home to read. To spread the load, each Year Group will have its own "borrowing and return day" (please see below). Children will also be able to access the library at other times throughout the week. Parents and carers are also very welcome to come into the library after school (between 3.30pm and 4.45pm) on the relevant day(s), to see what it has to offer and to help the choosing process!

Borrowing and return days:
Mondays: Elm, Willow, Years 1 and 2
Wednesdays: Years 3 and 4
Friday: Years 5 and 6

CROCODILE ON THE LOOSE!
Our library has its own resident crocodile – pictured above with two of his friends. He is called "Crocky-Lake", a name chosen by our reception classes. There's no need to worry though, he's very friendly and likes listening to stories. It sometimes looks as though he's more in danger from the children than the other way round!

Love our LRC…to the CORE
We don't want our LRC to be a stuffy place, where you get told off for talking! However, so that we properly look after our books and other resources (which have cost a lot of money!), it is important that everyone behaves appropriately in the LRC and always takes really good care of the books they borrow. To help us all to do this, you just need to remember "CORE":

Care - for the books, handle them properly and gently
Order - make sure all books are put back in the right order and right place
Respect - behave considerately and politely to everyone else in the LRC
Enjoy - the books and your learning!

VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!
Our Library is what it is largely thanks to those volunteers who have given so generously of their time and energy. If any parents/carers are interested in volunteering to assist with future operation of the library, please contact Tony Day, Newbridge Primary School Learning Resource Centre manager,
tony_day@newbridge.bathnes.sch.uk, 01225-421675 Extension 220.

PUPIL INVOLVEMENT IN THE LRC
This will be very important to help further stimulate children's interest in books, research and learning. A key way in which children can get involved is through volunteering to become Pupil Librarians. Initially, we plan to enable Year 6 to play this very responsible and interesting role and we may later invite Year 5 children to take part.

UNWANTED AUDIO BOOKS, DVDs or VIDEOS?
If anyone has any audio books, DVDs or videos that they no longer want or need, they would be gratefully received. We will, though, only be able to accept items that are classified as suitable for Primary School children.
