HEAD’S VIEW
Half term is here after a very fast five weeks! The last two weeks have seen Year 6 SATs take place, with Year 2 SATs taking place over a longer period. Our other children, from Year 1 upwards, have also had their assessments so that we can track their progress and ensure we are meeting their needs. As well as ongoing teacher assessment, we carry out these more formal assessments every six months throughout the children’s time at Newbridge and the outcomes of these very much inform the Reports coming out to you later this term. As you know, the future of Year 6 SATs in their current format is uncertain but what is certain is the attitude of the vast majority of our children towards their learning. We are so impressed with their desire to do their very best and we cannot ask for more than that! Huge credit goes to all the staff too for leaving no stone unturned to help the children be the best that they can be.
Sadly, we say farewell to Adam (2B) and Andrea (1H) who move to Peasedown St John Primary and Longwell Green Primary respectively. They both live quite a long way from our school and it will be so much easier for them and their families now. Both are delightful children and we will miss them very much, as we do Thomas (4W) who left us very recently and is settling in well at the Paragon. We wish them all the very best in the future.
You will find attached the first Governor Newsletter in our brief history! This newsletter will come out three or four times a year and is a step towards achieving our aim of bringing the governors and school community closer together. We hope you enjoy it and well done to Victoria Janseunne, our Chair of Governors, for making it happen.
I hope you all have an excellent half term break. For my part, I am hoping to do a spot of camping with the family …..fingers crossed for that heatwave!

· Friday 12th June – Dress up as a Book Character
The Book Fair will be running from Monday 8th to Thursday 11th. I would be really grateful for any parents who could run the fair. This involves unlocking the book cases and selling books for about half an hour at the end of the school day. If you can help please sign and return the slip attached to Ms Rhodes, via the School Office, by Wednesday 3rd June.
Please bring any unwanted Nearly New Books into school after the holiday. IR are hosting a book sale after school on Tuesday 9th June, as part of Book Week. Thank you. Mrs Rhodes.
WESTON VILLAGE OPEN GARDEN EVENT
Our Spiritual Garden and the Conservation Area are open for the public to see on Sunday 14th June between 1.00pm and 5.30pm. For the first time we are taking part in the Weston Village Open Garden Event and we are one of a number of gardens open for viewing (Mrs Rixson’s is another one!). Entry to all the gardens costs £5 on the day or £4 in advance. We have programmes on sale in the office and all proceeds go towards Dorothy House hospice. If you are able to take part, that would be great and if you can help, for at least part of the day, by manning the gates that would be equally great! Please let us know if you are able to help.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS
The deadline for showing an interest in learning one of the musical instruments at school from September was today. During the first two weeks back after half-term the peripatetic staff will be testing those children interested to see if they like the instrument and if they are able to play it. The teachers will be taking children out on the following days:
Monday - drums, guitars
Tuesday - brass
Wednesday - cellos
Thursday - violins
Friday - flutes
If there are any children who would like to start to learn an instrument from September, who have missed the deadline, then please notify the office before the relevant day, as shown above. Once the children have been tested, all children will be sent a letter to inform of fees and confirmation of lessons to be carried out.
Keyboard lessons are taught separately by Mrs Houston. There is currently a waiting list for lessons and so Mrs Houston will let all children know when there are spaces available.
If you have any other queries about peripatetic music lessons please see me as soon as possible. Miss Amies

Disco
Great fun was had by all of those who attended last Friday’s disco which raised a very respectable £450 towards the playground equipment for the Upper School. I would like to thank Steph Massie, Lisa Lansdown and Andy Lawrence for organising the event, Stewart Taylor for supplying the drinks(which certainly helped get people on the dance floor) and Kelvin Rogers for helping him run the bar. Thank you to the class reps for selling the tickets and to Nigel Lansdown, Richard Burton, Anna Whitson and Julian Massie for turning the hall into a disco venue! And, finally, a big thank you to Paulo Baigent for the music and everyone who came along and danced late into the night!
Summer Fete – Saturday July 11th: 2.00pm - 4.30pm
Make sure this date is in your diaries and keep it free as your children will not thank you if you miss this one! Like the Christmas Fair it will, however, need a whole army of volunteers to make it happen! And that is where you come in! Over the next six weeks we will be bombarding you with requests for help, cakes, prizes and all sorts of other things! We are planning to have an events ring with dance and music displays by the children, a competition tent (more details below), cream teas, a barbecue and a variety of stalls including skittles and a coconut shy. We are also hoping to be able to feature all sorts of crafts but that will all depend on your help…
We also need to borrow gazebos, a coconut shy, a Punch and Judy and we need to find the stocks which we know are out there somewhere! If you have any of these, please get in touch with NPSA as soon as possible.

ARTS WEEK
Please see the attached letter from Miss Higginbotham and Mr Baigent about an Arts Week we are holding the week beginning 29th June. We have added this week to the original calendar. We are really excited by the art work that we see on a daily basis and we are looking forward to celebrating our children’s creativity and talents during that week. We have a number of very artistic parents too and their support for that week, as well as ongoing projects, such as art club and the upper school cloakroom mural, is greatly appreciated.
QUESTIONNAIRES
The feedback you provide in the questionnaires we send out is invaluable and genuinely informs our development planning for the future. We are also aware of questionnaire and survey ‘burnout’ and, with this in mind, we are moving to a two yearly cycle of the full parental questionnaire. We have your input from the last two years to inform our planning and the next one will be sent out in the summer of 2010. We are going to carry out a survey of pupil views this summer and will continue to alternate with the parental questionnaire in the coming years. Now, that’s not to say our parents and carers get off ‘scot free’! We do need your views on particular aspects of our development plan. A little while ago, for example, our Foundation Stage parents were asked for their views on the induction process and the feedback they gave us very much informed the current arrangements. There are two more short questionnaires coming out over the next six months. One is related to the transition process for children moving from one year to the next within the school. This review is being led by Mrs Bartlett and the other is our provision for the gifted, able and talented which is being led by Mr Hempleman. As always the time you take on these is appreciated and they do make a difference in the future.

CELEBRATING WRITING
Lily – 4W
One night Amir, who was the son of the richest Brahmin in town, was going home and he saw a small, tatty girl with no shoes. When he looked a bit closer he saw she was crying. So Amir decided to tip-toe over to her.
“What are you doing out here when you could be in your warm house?” he asked.
“My name is Tara, I am an orphan. I do not have a house that I can shelter in and I am very hungry.” The girl replied.
“My name is Amir. I will show you a field full of ripe yellow bananas, you can eat there” whispered Amir, so no-one would know that he was stealing. So Amir took her by the hand and showed her to the banana field. It was gorgeous, rows and rows of ripe, lush, yellow bananas, glinting in the soft moonlight.
After a big and delicious meal, Amir decided to sneak into the farmers house and get some water to wash it down.
“No”, shouted Tara as he walked towards the house, “he will catch you and beat you up”.
“He won’t” answered Amir.
So Tara went and hid behind a big green bush to see what would happen. Suddenly Amir came rushing out with the angry farmer chasing him. Soon enough he caught Amir and beat him with a stick. Slowly but cautiously he dragged himself over to where Tara was hiding.
“Ha, ha, ha” shouted Tara, “you got what you deserve”.
So Amir and Tara walked back to the Banyan tree.

One day on a hot and humid farm in the forest, a man called Amit, selfish and greedy, lived in a small hut with his animals. He needed a water buffalo to plough his fields. He bought an extremely enormous buffalo. Amit took him to a field and cried to the buffalo, “Get a move on!” It went on like this for a couple of weeks, the buffalo felt tired and lonely.
Amit didn’t let any other people see the buffalo. One day, in the afternoon, the buffalo broke through the cage that he was captured in. Quickly, in the commotion, the buffalo charged over Amit. Amit died a few days later. Before he died he whispered, “I should have not been so selfish.” The end.
FOOTBALL REPORT
On Thursday 7th May Newbridge Football team played Paulton. We got off to a great start when Oscar played the ball to Joe who had a stunning shot which hit the cross bar. Jacob ran down the wing and got fouled and won a free kick and shot and the keeper hit it out and Joe headed it into the box. Paulton suddenly had a counter attack and Jake cleared it to Tom and he played a ball to Jacob but they cleared it. Jacob took the throw in and Joe headed it but the keeper saved it. In the second half Jacob and Joe had great pressure and they lost the ball. Jacob passed to Joe and he played a beautiful ball through to Harry and he slotted it in. Joe then passed the ball to Jacob and he smashed it but it hit the crossbar. Suddenly Paulton came back with two goals and Newbridge lost the match 2-1. We would like to thank Mr Cumpson and everyone else for supporting us. By Jacob, Joe and Max.

VACANCY FOR ASSISTANT SITE SUPERVISOR
ASSISTANT SITE SUPERVISOR
We would like to make our facilities available for use by the local community. To progress with this we are seeking to appoint, with immediate effect, an Assistant Site Supervisor who would live very near the school.
The key responsibility of this post is to open, close and secure the school premises for use by outside lettings. These would normally take place between 6.00pm and 9.00pm on weekdays. Pay is £6.39 per hour but this would increase depending on the number of rooms being let. After the first session of a new letting there would not normally be a need for the Assistant Site Supervisor to stay on site for the duration of the letting.
Initially we expect only one or two lettings a week but this will probably increase over a period of time.
If you are interested in this post please contact the school office for further details and an application form. Closing date for applications is Friday 22nd May 2009.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY USE OF OUTDOOR FACILITIES AFTER SCHOOL
It appears that my request in the recent School Newsletter (Issue 5.01) to use only the school field after 3.15pm has caused some consternation among a number of our Foundation Stage parents and I thought it would be useful to write this open letter to clear up any misunderstandings about this matter.
Use of the lower playground, the surrounding play equipment and the grassy areas at the back of 1H, 2B, 2C, 3B and 3H after school and without authorised supervision has concerned several Infant School headteachers over the years. Many times in the past these headteachers have requested parents not to allow their children to use these facilities. In fact, I reiterated this in a past newsletter (Issue 6:05 04/07/08) but it has not been part of the Induction literature, nor has it been signposted in any way, and we will address this to make our expectations clearer.
There has been talk about ‘handing over’ authority to parents and carers after 3.15pm but I am afraid that is not an option. The Local Authority has made it very clear that the welfare and safety of all children and adults on the site, at all times, is the responsibility of the staff and, ultimately, my responsibility as Headteacher and I cannot pass this on. The idea of a ‘disclaimer’ would not stand in a court of law and nor would it be practicable. I am sure you are all aware of the demands of Health and Safety in our workplaces and schools are certainly no exception. We are required to carry out extensive risk assessments on use of facilities and resources in school, as well as every trip out of school, and procedures have to be watertight to ensure the welfare and safety of our children at all times.
Our school is an exception in that it encourages families to stay on after school for a while because we see that as an important part of being a community school and part of our ethos. We know of very few schools that do this. However, safety and welfare is still of paramount importance and being able to play on an open field, with easy visual access by the many parents and adults around, presents a suitable compromise between ensuring safety and giving families the chance to play together. Playing in other areas such as the steep slopes above the lower school classrooms, on playground equipment and in areas where trees are being climbed does not present a suitable compromise.
The issue is that we would need trained supervisors in place, with consistent expectations of what the children can do and cannot do. We just do not have the staff with the time nor do we have the budget to allow us to do this. In addition, we would need several members of staff to supervise all these areas appropriately. As parents, we all have very different ideas about what is safe or not, and what constitutes appropriate supervision. Several times in the fortnight before my newsletter message, I found toddlers at the top of those steep slopes with a concrete path and wall at the bottom, I found children climbing trees and playground equipment being used in dangerous ways – all situations that we would never allow during the school day. I cannot turn a blind eye to this because if there was a serious accident then it would be me who is responsible and, of even more importance, it would be on my conscience that I knew about it and did nothing to prevent it.
This action is not born out of any desire to keep the school community at arm’s length. In fact, one of our aims is to continually strengthen our community links at all levels and plans are in place to bring this about. It comes down to plain common sense and expectations that are placed upon schools to ensure that our children grow and develop in a safe environment.
I thank you once again for your support and help in this matter.

Mr J Croker

NEWSLETTER Issue: 5.03
MESSAGE TO OUR NEIGHBOURS ...
Now that the dust has well and truly settled on our major building work, we would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding over the upheaval and disturbance caused. We are really pleased with our new facilities and we think future generations of children will enjoy the benefits. We would like to invite you for a tour of our school on Tuesday 16th June between 1.30 and 2.30pm. There will be refreshments from 2.00 – 3.15pm in the Blue Room. If you are able to come can you please contact the school office on the above number so that we can cater appropriately. We look forward to seeing you.

CELEBRATING WRITING
Journey to the Sun by 1R
I was travelling towards the sun; it was getting hotter and hotter as I got closer!
Suddenly, aliens attacked us! We fought the aliens. There was crashing and bashing and then the captain of the space rocket had a great idea. So he got a big mirror and bounced the sun’s rays back towards the aliens. Suddenly they burnt and melted into ashes and slime.
The people in the space ship were sad because they were peaceful people and they only went to the sun to get power to take back to their planet. They carried on and zoomed to the sun. They got power from the sun in big plastic bottles which they shoved onboard the ship.
They went back to earth and lived happily ever after.
GOLDEN BOOT AWARD
Two of our parents (and governors), Mr Hamilton and Mrs Hanney, introduced the idea of ‘The Golden Boot Award’ and this week we presented it for the first time. This award was brought in to encourage children to walk to school, use bikes or scooters, public transport or anything more eco-friendly than a car. The children’s teachers will fill in a form which gets added up. The class with the lowest points win and this week’s winners are 1H! We hope that this scheme will lower the percentage of cars that come to school to help the environment!
By Ava and Eloise
(‘Thank you for introducing this, Ava and Eloise. This impressive trophy, made by our very own Mr Cumpson and his son Will, will be presented weekly for the next three weeks to start with. This is part of our travel plan and the children are currently working on me to do my bit by travelling into school by bike. A 54 mile round journey …….. now that could be interesting!’ Mr Croker)

TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT
On Saturday 2nd May two Newbridge Tag Rugby teams went to Odd Down playing fields for the BANES tag rugby tournament. The B team had 3 games to play against St Martin’s, St Mary’s and St Andrew’s. The first game was against St Martin’s. The result was 8-6. The tries were scored by Harry, Wilf, Max and John. Our second match was against St Mary’s which we unfortunately lost 9-4. Our last match was against St Andrew’s and we just won 8-7.
By Harry and John.
Newbridge Primary School A team played eight matches in all on a very warm day. We won five of our matches, drew one, in a brilliant game in which we showed the Newbridge fighting spirit, and lost two. The final match was our hardest because we had lost nearly all of our energy. We were losing 3-0 and sadly lost the game. We came 3rd out of 9, on the same number of points as the team in second place, and so were only two places away from getting through to the final. We would like to thank all our fantastic supporters and Mr Croker for coaching us.

LIBRARY
A CHANGE TO LIBRARY OPENING HOURS
Due to unavoidable changes in Mr Day’s other commitments outside of Newbridge, the library will not be available after school for the immediate future, starting from next week. However, it remains our intention for the library to be open after school for our pupils and their families to come and use and we are currently exploring alternative staffing arrangements to enable after-school opening to restart as soon as possible. Once arrangements are in place, I will let pupils, parents and carers know. I am pleased to say that Mr Day will still be working in the library on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and lunchtimes as now.
THANK YOU PUPIL LIBRARIANS!
The first group of Year 6 Pupil Librarians, who worked in our library since it opened for lending in November, have just stepped down to enable a second group of keen Year 6’s to take a turn in the role. Mr Day, our Learning Resource Centre manager, presented each of the outgoing Pupil Librarians with a special Certificate of Achievement in assembly last Friday.
“Everyone of the Pupil Librarians has been fantastic,” said Mr Day. “Our library now has over 7,000 books in its database and has made well over 2,000 book loans to the children, who seem to really enjoy coming to the library. Without all the efforts of the Pupil Librarians this would not have been possible.”
Mr Day would like to publicly thank and congratulate the following Pupil Librarians for their help: Hannah, Joda, Amelia, Harrison, Alayna, Sherilyn, Jake, Emily, Matthew, Jacob, Isaac and last, but definitely not least, Jasmin.

Fundraising for Upper School Playground Equipment
Firstly, a big thankyou to everyone who came along to Monday’s NPSA meeting.
One of the key points discussed at Monday’s NPSA meeting was the new adventure / fitness trail equipment to be sited where the Year 3 double mobile used to be. With the remaining ReNewbridge money, plus the money that we have raised this year and not yet committed, we have about £7,000 to put towards this equipment. The school is seeking to supplement this with funds from its Devolved Capital budget which can be spent only on development of the premises, facilities and environment. Tenders are currently being sought with a deadline for submission by next Friday and it appears that a target figure of £15000 would provide a trail which gives flexibility of use and an exciting facility for children of all ages to use. However, the cost of safety surfacing is high and it may be that we build a trail now with a view to extending further in the future. The exciting news is that we are hoping to get this equipment built at school during the summer term, so that our Year 6 children have an opportunity to use it. However, in order to achieve this, we still need to raise at least £3,000 this year. We believe that we can do this with your help by supporting the cake sales, the disco on 15th May and the Summer Fair on 11th July.
We also wonder whether anyone has an idle sewing machine (for making costumes) or unwanted freezer (so that we can sell ice-creams/lolllies after school on sunny summer days) that they are willing to donate to school? If so, please contact NPSA via the tray in reception or email us at npsa@hotmail.co.uk.

Enjoyed the quiz but not sure about a disco? Then why not tackle the musical quiz sheet whilst enjoying a quiet drink in the chill out room! Something you really want to dance to? Then email your request to DJ Paulo at speaktomegabriel@googlemail.com . Tickets on sale from your class rep or just complete and return the form below to reception. NPSA NEWS
